Vivica knew she was no match for Larissa in a war of words. Swallowing the urge to retort, she hurried after her husband and left the room.
“Hmph. And they wanted to settle a score with me,” Larissa muttered, popping another grape into her mouth.
Sapphira and Neville discreetly left the room, giving Haskell and Larissa some private time to themselves.
Crispin followed suit.
Once the door was closed, Haskell’s gaze locked onto Larissa, his eyes shining with open admiration and deep affection. “Crashing into Leopold was a brilliant move, beautifully executed. You might be the only person in the world who could pull off something so audacious and walk away unscathed.”
Larissa smiled at his praise. “Don’t go getting any ideas. I wouldn’t have taken a risk like that without being a hundred percent sure of the outcome.”
“My grandfather asked if we should postpone the engagement. I told him no,” Haskell said.
“I figured as much,” Larissa replied. “I told my family the same thing.”
They shared a smile. Neither of them had been seriously injured in the crash. Haskell was eager to hold their engagement party and announce their relationship to the world; he didn't want to wait another day.
Having had her fill of grapes, Larissa wiped her hands with a tissue. “Come here. It’s time for your treatment.”
“Alright.” Haskell wheeled his chair closer.
Haskell’s face hardened. “It happened so long ago, it’s difficult to investigate. If Draven and Valeria hadn’t gotten so brazen after I was injured in her ‘kidnapping,’ it never would have crossed my mind that he might not be my brother at all, but Thatch Palmer’s illegitimate son, swapped at birth.”
“I’m torn,” he admitted. “On one hand, I hope he isn’t my brother. It would explain why he and Valeria did what they did, and I could find some peace knowing it wasn’t my own flesh and blood who wanted me dead.”
“But on the other hand, if he isn't, what happened to my real brother? Did Thatch get rid of him when he was sent away? Is he alive? Where is he now, and is he okay?”
Larissa’s eyes flickered, but her hand remained steady as she inserted another needle with precision. “I understand, but torturing yourself won’t help. Since you have suspicions, you have to see the investigation through, no matter how bad the outcome might be. Then you can seek revenge on those who deserve it and search for those who are lost.”
A smile broke through Haskell’s gloom. “You know, Larissa, I really do love being with you. Every time we talk, I feel like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders.”
