Larissa let out a soft laugh, meeting his dark, intense gaze. “Then let’s be together. It’s not like I’m stopping you. Besides, after the engagement party on Saturday, I’ll officially be your fiancée. It would be strange if we weren’t together.”

Her words were always so direct, yet so welcome.

Haskell found himself wanting to thank Valeria for arranging that kidnapping. It had cost him the use of his legs and his engagement to Honora, but it had also led him to a small village to meet the long-lost Judson heiress who was being brought back to be a substitute bride—and the woman he had fallen for at first sight. Every step had led him here, to her.

Halfway through the treatment, Crispin opened the door.

“Apologies for the interruption, sir. Your father and Draven are here again.”

“Let them wait,” Haskell said coolly.

“Yes, sir.”

Crispin retreated. A moment later, a disgruntled voice could be heard through the door.

“What is he doing in the next room? Making his own father wait?”

“Crispin, you tell him I have urgent business! He needs to come here and deal with it now!”

Hearing the entitled tone, Larissa scoffed. “Your father still knows how to put on airs, even after you found out Valeria is his illegitimate daughter.”

Haskell thought for a moment. “Probably because he was handsome. My mother must have figured she had the brains covered, so she picked a partner with good looks.”

Larissa paused, looking at Haskell’s face, and it suddenly clicked. “Alright, you can’t argue with good looks.”

“So, when your grandfather wanted to send your brother away because of what some fortune-teller said, your mother agreed?”

Larissa couldn’t imagine a woman like that being so submissive.

Haskell shook his head. “Of course she didn’t agree. But my father sent Draven away in secret. My mother died in a car accident while she was out looking for him.”
