Last Female Sypher and Her Brother’s Friends

Chapter 178

“We need to keep the sick members away from our healthy children, elderly, and pregnant females,” Elliot inputs.

“We’ll divide and conquer. We’ll move the most vulnerable into the east upper wings furthest from the imnifrmary,” says Aria.

Elliot crosses his arms over his chest. “Good. I’ll take point and work with the other alphas to move the people around.”

Within an hour, teams are assembled.

I lead the investigation group. We start by testing the water from the springs, the water we bathe with, and the underground stores we keep. Juno’s sister joins us to run a simple test to determine if they are clean. The food stores are along more complicated. Every grain and cut of meet neededto be accounted for, who took the better part of the afternoon and early evening. The saving grace is that the produce grown in the garden is guaranteed to be clean because of being separate for everything else.

While we are waiting for the results of the last of the game, I broach the topic that has been knocking around in my head all morning.

“So, Lorain’s godfather, how does that feel?” I ask, looking down at Aria.

She doesn’t seem bothered by his presence; in fact, part of her almost enjoys it.

“Rick is…” Aria struggles to find the word for the older man, “Interesting.”

“Is that good?”

“Don’t know yet, but he has already taught me things about being a syhper that I wouldn’t have otherwise known.”

“Do you think we can trust him?”

“I do. He’s got his own horse in this race, his own scars, and a score to settle. So even if I didn’t trust his loyalty, I would trust his desire

to see the assembly fall.”

Juno approaches, face tight. “One third of our food and water reserves are contaminated.”

“Shit.” The hit will set us back, but not enough to worry…yet.

It takes us another hour to remove all the compromised food. When we head back towards the ground levels, all the relocation has been finished, and the sick have been quarantined.

Aria and I are on our way to the dining hall when Liam intercepts us.

“Baric has been infected. He’s just been taken into the infirmary.”

The desire to go to him has my body turning in the direction of the infirmary. Aria is two steps ahead of me. When we arrive there, we

meet Ronan and Theo, who are currently speaking with Jona, a healer from the waning moon pack who is wearing a mask.

“How is he?” I ask when we get close enough.

“No worse than the others. Jonan explains. “His onset came on more rapidly, though, so we think it’s safe to assume it is affecting people

at a faster rate. Before you ask, I’m sorry you can’t see him. The testing has confirmed that this can be passed through airborne

pathogens.”

“So what are we supposed to do?” Theo asks, frustrated.

Aria rubs his arms in a calming gesture.

“Exactly what you’re doing now. Focus on your tasks. We will reach out to the Alphas when we have something to update, but to keep as

many people healthy as we can, we need you to steer clear.”

“Jona is right. If too many people get stuck, it will leave the others vulnerable,” Aira says.

“I’d like updates on his condition,” Ronan says, looking put out at the fact that he can’t go in.

“Of course, Alpha,” Jona says with a nod.

We step away reluctantly.

“Want to just head to the room?” Aria asks.

I run a hand down my face. “Yeah, I think I’m done with today.”

When we enter the room, we all move around and get ready for the night, changing our clothes and taking a quick bath before returning and getting some much–needed alone time. I lie down on our bed next to Theo, while Ronan sits up with his back against the wall, and Aria lies on her stomach, propped up on her elbows. I look over her form, taking in the changes to her body, the firm tones of muscle that

she built from her daily training.

“I don’t mean to shit on our already crap shoot of the day guys but I have to let you know something that shouldn’t leave this room,”

Theo says.
