Chapter 233
Kaelani stood before the tall gilded mirror as three Seelie attendants moved around her with quiet grace. One stood behind her, fingers deft as she drew the silk laces tight along the back of her gown, threading them through delicate loops until the dark violet fabric hugged her waist perfectly. The dress shimmered when she shifted, catching the light in a thousand subtle glints, as though the night sky itself had been spun into silk.
Another attendant knelt at her feet, fastening the slender straps of her heels as they laced upward around her ankles in elegant, winding patterns. The final attendant worked carefully at her hair, securing the last pins into an intricate updo that left soft tendrils framing her face.
Across the room, Julian stood surrounded by his own small entourage.
One attendant adjusted the fall of his ceremonial jacket–deep charcoal with subtle gold threading along the seams–while another straightened the collar at his neck. A third carefully secured his cufflinks, polishing the metal once more before stepping back.
Julian barely noticed any of them.
His eyes were on her.
They had been for some time.
Kaelani glanced toward him, only to find his gaze already waiting. The look on his face was quiet, reverent, and entirely unguarded.
“You become more beautiful to me every day,” he said through their mind–link, his voice warm and steady in her mind.
Her breath caught for the briefest second before a blush crept up her cheeks.
“And you look very handsome tonight,” she replied softly through the bond, smiling at him in the mirror.
Julian shifted his attention to his own reflection, lifting a hand to sweep his fingers lightly through his sandy–colored hair.
“Maybe I should get a haircut,” he mused through the mind–link.
Kaelani turned toward him immediately.
“No,” she said.
Then her expression softened, her eyes roaming over him thoughtfully.
“Maybe just a little off the length,” she added. “But… I love your hair like that.”
Julian met her gaze again, a slow smile spreading across his face.
And if the attendants noticed the silent exchange passing between them, none of them dared interrupt it.

Then she looked back over her shoulder.
Julian was already there.
