It wasn’t just Felix and Evan.
Those two had disappointed Stella so completely that she had long since stopped expecting anything from them.
But now, she felt the same way about everyone.
Anyone at all.
“Even family can’t be relied on. So what makes you think I could ever rely on you or Evan?”
Just as she had said, it had happened too many times.
In Harbor City and Seaborne, Evan had chosen to abandon her.
In Eirden, Aaron had done the same.
So had Felix.
Whenever their interests were at stake, she had been the one sacrificed.
After being abandoned again and again, how could Stella possibly dare to choose anyone anymore?
She didn’t.
Especially when it came to love.
She had never understood it.
Never seen it clearly.
Sometimes, it felt as though everything had simply been fate.
Felix fell silent.
For a moment, he had no idea what to say.
She was right.
If Stella couldn’t even trust family, how could she possibly trust romantic love?
“Your brother just doesn’t know what family is supposed to look like,” Felix said quietly. “He and your father have lived that way for years.”
No matter what happened, the Hogarth family’s interests always came first.
That was how Aaron had been raised.
His understanding of family was completely different from Stella’s.
The way they related to the people closest to them had never been the same.
Otherwise, when Stella first returned to the Hogarth family, Aaron never would have arranged for her to learn all those things.
It was unfortunate.
No matter how ruthless Stella could be toward the Wright family, deep down, she had always cared deeply about the people she loved.
And after being hurt by the family she had trusted most, she had shut herself off emotionally.
Stella said nothing.
“Your father is still in the hospital,” Felix added.
At the mention of Michael, Stella remained silent.
Felix had once assumed that since Michael had raised Aaron to be that way, he must have been just as emotionally detached.
But Stella’s disappearance had hit him harder than anyone expected.
