Just as Ivy had predicted, Evan did call Amos.
Early the next morning, Amos’s phone rang.
The moment he answered, Evan said, “Everyone in the Wright family is dead.”
Amos fell silent.
His brows twitched hard.
Man...
It was tragic, sure, but this really wasn’t something Evan should be telling him.
There was nothing Amos could do about it.
Whenever Amos had no way to respond to something, he usually just stayed quiet.
Like now.
Even offering comfort felt pointless.
When Evan heard nothing from him, he finally came right out and asked,
“Amos, can you help me this once?”
Amos nearly choked.
Seriously?
He was asking that directly?
Amos sucked in a sharp breath.
“I can’t help you.”
He didn’t even ask what Evan wanted him to do.
He simply said he couldn’t.
That was how firmly he refused.
And he had good reason.
Amos had grown up with Aaron.
No one knew better than he did what kind of monster Michael had raised him to become.
And now Aaron knew that the Wright family had been responsible for his mother’s death.
Anyone who stepped in front of him at a time like this was basically volunteering to die.
Evan was asking Amos to help him just this once?
Sure.
Because if Amos agreed, there wouldn’t be a second time.
He wouldn’t survive the first.
Evan went still.
“You...”
He clearly hadn’t expected Amos to reject him so quickly.
Amos hadn’t even hesitated.
Not for a second.
“I know you hate him,” Amos said. “But your family was in the wrong first.”
