Wrong.
Back then, when Gray found that evidence, he had said it was real.
Gray was one of Aaron’s most capable men.
Aaron himself had assigned him to Stella.
He was clearly highly competent.
So how could he have made a mistake this serious?
Something about the whole thing felt wrong.
As though one part of the investigation had gone off course.
But where?
“Back when Gray was investigating the case, Mr. Henderson’s people gave him quite a bit of help.”
Stella went still.
Felix?
Gray had only just arrived in Harbor City at the time.
If he wanted to investigate something there, he would naturally have needed local leads and resources.
And those leads had come from Felix’s people?
“You’re saying the mistakes in that investigation might have something to do with Felix?”
“That’s difficult to say for certain.”
Stella fell silent.
Difficult to say.
Which meant the possibility was there.
By the time Stella ended the call, she barely remembered doing it.
Her thoughts were a complete mess.
Aaron.
Felix.
Evan.
On the surface, none of them had seemed suspicious at the time.
So why did everything suddenly feel wrong now?
Aaron had trusted Felix.
And Stella had trusted Felix too.
Could there have been something between Felix and Evan that she didn’t know about?
And then there was Remi’s sudden appearance.
Why exactly had she come here?
The more Stella thought about it, the more nothing seemed right.
...
By dinnertime, Stella still hadn’t come out of her room.
Felix frowned.
“Where is she?”
“Miss Rowan said she doesn’t want to eat,” the housekeeper replied respectfully.
Felix immediately stood and went upstairs.
When he reached Stella’s room, he found the door locked from the inside.
He twisted the handle twice.
It didn’t budge.
The air around him turned colder.
He suppressed the anger in his voice.
“Stella. Open the door.”
