Chapter 228
Right now, everyone had pinned the missing child on Stella.
Jennifer was worried sick.
At eleven that night, she was still on the phone with Stella.
“Evan said if the baby isn’t back by morning, he’s calling the police himself.”
Jennifer exploded on the spot. “Is he out of his mind?”
They had lived together for years.
And this was what it came down to?
Not even the most basic level of trust?
But then again… the way Evan was reacting now made it obvious. There had never been any real trust to begin with.
If there had been, things wouldn’t look like this.
When Stella didn’t respond, Jennifer pressed, “Do you have any kind of plan?”
“I’m waiting.”
“For what?”
“For him to call the police.”
Jennifer went silent.
“…Wait, what?”
She was actually waiting for Evan to call the police?
In Harbor City, if Evan personally filed a report, the consequences for Stella wouldn’t be something to brush off.
Then again…
Stella had the Hogarth family behind her now.
Before, she wouldn’t have been able to bear the fallout.
But things were different now.
Jennifer sucked in a sharp breath. “Do you really think he’ll do it?”
“I want to see if he will.”
He said he would.
And from the way he said it, he meant it.
Hearing how calm Stella sounded only made Jennifer sigh.

“How did things between you two end up like this?”
She had always known a family like the Wrights would eventually push Stella to her limit.
But she hadn’t expected it to go this far between Stella and Evan themselves.
“It’s already like this,” Stella said lightly. “What’s the point of asking why?”
She truly didn’t care anymore.
And somehow, that made Jennifer feel both relieved and uneasy.
“You and Evan are really going at each other now,” she said.
Before, Stella had been going after the Wright family. After Summer
Now Evan had finally taken a stand.
And he had chosen them.
Stella gave a quiet hum. “We’ll see what happens in the morning. Summer’s still deciding whether to hand the baby over to me so I can trade it for a divorce.”
“You trust her?”
“Of course not.”
Trust Summer?
Not a chance.
Stella would sooner trust a stranger than believe a single word from her.
“So if Evan really calls the police tomorrow morning,” she added calmly, “it’s not like I’m unprepared.”
They talked a little longer before hanging up.
The moment the call ended, her phone rang again.
This time, it was Aaron.

His voice came through, warm and steady. “Before Father’s birthday banquet, settle everything and come
back to Eirden.”
“I know.”
Even if he hadn’t reminded her, she hadn’t forgotten.
She was going back.
“Mm.” He paused, then added, “Summer’s mother has gotten close to Arthur Nevin.”
