Chapter 230
The moment Summer saw Evan standing in the doorway, her heart started pounding.
Especially when her eyes met his cold, cutting stare.
Had he heard them…?
“St… Steven?”
She froze for only a second before her eyes reddened. She looked at him with tears pooling instantly.
They fell just as quickly.
Evan glanced at the wrist wrapped in a pressure bandage. Even now, blood was seeping through.
His eyes narrowed.
Mrs. Mendes went rigid under that look.
And Summer, under the weight of his presence, felt a wave of panic she couldn’t hide.
“Wh-when did you get here?” she asked shakily.
Evan’s voice was flat. “Are you scared?”
“What?”
That one word made Summer’s heart lurch even harder.
She barely dared meet his eyes now.
“What are you afraid of?” he asked.
“I’m not afraid.”
She said she wasn’t.
But her whole body was trembling, and Mrs. Mendes beside her wasn’t doing any better.
They had dared to build this scheme around the child.
But the truth was, both of them were terrified that Evan would find out.
Everyone knew exactly what kind of reputation Evan had in Harbor City.
If he discovered they had used the baby as part of a setup, no one needed to guess how that would end.
That was why, before doing any of this, Summer and Mrs. Mendes had prepared over and over again.
And deep down, Summer knew perfectly well why Evan cared so much about the child.
It all came back to Steven.
Summer forced herself to look up at Evan, tears trembling in her eyes.
Evan only gave her a cold glance.

At that moment, Dora stepped out from behind him. “What do you think you’re doing?”
Since it now looked like Summer’s mother might resolve things overseas after all, Dora had already started protecting Summer again.
She stepped forward and spoke to her gently. “Don’t ever do something like this again.
“Mom.”
Faced with Dora’s hypocrisy, Summer played along perfectly. In front of her, she looked like a wounded little rabbit, desperate for protection.
Dora pulled her into her arms and patted her back.
Summer sniffled. “When… when will they find my baby?”
As she said it, the tears fell right on cue.
At that moment, she looked exactly like a pitiful mother who had lost her child.
Dora fell silent.
She had no idea how to answer that.
So she turned and looked at Evan.
His face was tight with tension.
He didn’t answer directly. He only said coldly, “Where are the bodyguards?”
There had been plenty of guards posted outside Summer’s room before, even female guards inside.
They were there to keep her from making trouble.
And yet now, not a single one of them was here.
The coldness radiating off Evan was unmistakable.
Dora answered, “When Ruby came back and saw that, she was very unhappy.”
Because of Ruby, she had no choice but to have them removed.
She hadn’t expected this.
