Chapter 249

The sound of that slap snapped Evan to his feet.

He turned, his gaze icy as it landed on Stella.

She stood there, unmoving, her eyes cold, both hands clenched into fists.

Looking straight at Dora, she said, word by word, “Mother-in-law? Did you forget? You’re the one who’s always said I was an uneducated orphan.

“So what, now you expect me to suddenly have manners and just take it from you?”

Family.

That word had always been the deepest wound in her heart.

All those years in the orphanage, how badly she had longed for family… and then her child-

The loss of that child had been the fuse for everything between her and Evan.

The baby was gone. She hadn’t been able to protect it.

The guilt, the self-blame… all of it had driven her to want out of this hellhole of a family.

And now Dora was still using that against her?

Her last line of defense had been ripped open, leaving behind only the sharp, brutal armor she used to protect herself.

Dora trembled with rage. “Y-you… was I wrong? Maybe your family and your child all died because of you! Maybe they deserved it because of how vicious you are-”

She didn’t get to finish.

Stella didn’t even know what she grabbed.

She just swung it straight at Dora.

Thankfully, Evan reacted fast. He stepped in and blocked it.

It was a thermal food container.

It didn’t hit Dora, but it slammed to the floor right beside her head with a loud bang that made her ears ring.

Her face turned pale. She pointed at Stella, her hand shaking. “You’ve lost your mind. You’ve completely lost your mind…”

Stella had already been pushed past reason.

Now that she had found her brother and father, family had become her absolute bottom line.

And her child-that was her deepest pain.

Dora, convinced Stella had taken the baby, had lost her rationality too.

Stella grabbed a chair and moved forward-

Evan pulled her back, locking her in his arms. “That’s enough!”

Dora struggled to her feet. “Evan!”

She shouted his name, voice sharp with fury.

“Stop it, both of you!” Evan roared.

The air was thick with tension, like it could explode at any second.

Dora was shaking with anger. “I don’t care. The baby has to be handed over today. I’m taking her back to the hospital.”

Stella snapped, “I’ll hand you-”

“Enough!” Evan cut her off again, his voice full of rage.

The three of them stood locked in confrontation.

The servants and the housekeeper hovered nearby, wanting to step in, but not daring to move.

Everyone was on edge.

Then-

Both Evan’s and Dora’s phones rang at the same time.

Dora,

still trembling with anger, pulled hers out and answered. “What is it?”

Even over the phone, she couldn’t suppress her fury

Evan held Stella with one arm and answered his call with the other. “Talk.”

Whatever came through those calls-

Both their expressions changed instantly.

“What?” they both blurted out at the same time.

Their voices rose in unison.

A chill crept up Stella’s spine.

She glanced at Dora, then at Evan.

Both of them hung up at the same time.

And then-
