“All I want is a child of my own. I want to see my child come into this world and grow up. Is that really so hard to achieve?” Briana sobbed.
“I don’t care about my own life. I don’t. I want my baby to live, no matter what. I’ll do anything, whatever it takes, for my baby to survive,” she added.
Briana was crying so hard she could barely breathe, her whole face streaked with tears.
“Why is my body so weak? Why does getting pregnant have to be so complicated for me?” she choked out. “No matter what anyone else thinks, I won’t give up. I’m determined to have this baby.”
She poured out her emotions, sobbing uncontrollably, feeling sorry for herself, and completely helpless. Her eyes were swollen and red from all the crying. She’d gone through more than half a box of tissues.
At least the doctors were there with her, doing their best to comfort her.
“I understand how you feel,” the doctor said gently. “No one could accept something like this easily. But this is the reality, and you’ll have to come to terms with it. Besides, you’re still young.”
“Young? What good does being young do me?” Briana shot back.
“After your heart surgery, if you take good care of yourself, maybe in three or five years, you could try to get pregnant again,” the doctor said.
Briana shook her head. “That’s impossible. Don’t lie to me. Even after the surgery, my heart won’t be the same. As I get older, the risks of pregnancy will only get worse.”
Briana thought, ‘Instead of waiting for some uncertain future, I should grab this chance while I still can.”
“Anything can happen in life,” the doctor said gently. “You should really talk to your family about this. It’s too much for anyone to handle alone.”
Briana bit her lip, head down, her shoulders trembling as she cried.
The doctor kept talking, but Briana was barely listening. Because the doctor kept repeating the same advice over and over. She should let go of the baby and save her own life.
The doctor told her she could always try for another child in the future, or maybe, not having kids at all was okay, too. After all, there were plenty of couples out there who lived happily without children.
But her life was irreplaceable. She only had this one, and it was truly precious.
“You still have the option to end the pregnancy now,” the doctor reminded her softly. “Think about it. If you wait until six months, you might have to deliver a premature baby who’ll need to stay in an incubator, and you-”
Briana sat there, numb, barely hearing a word. No matter how hard the doctor tried to talk her out of it, her resolve didn’t budge.
When Briana walked out of the hospital, sunlight washed over her. It was warm, so bright that it hurt.
But Briana felt an icy chill creeping into her bones, colder with every step.
Her legs were weighed down with lead. She could barely move. She tried to move forward, but no matter how hard she pushed herself, she couldn’t take a single step.
Briana glanced down at her legs, lost and uncertain. Suddenly, everything went black. And then, she knew nothing at all.

Briana’s body went limp as she collapsed to the ground, her eyes tightly shut and her lips drained of all color.
Suddenly, someone rushed out and grabbed her before she hit the ground.

“Oh my God,” Charles exclaimed, panic in his voice. “She’s out cold. I hope she didn’t faint from stress. Please let her be okay.”
Camila rushed over, shouting, “Quit panicking and call a doctor! Doctor!”
The two of them scrambled to get Briana into the ER.
Briana lay on the hospital bed, not moving at all.
No matter how loudly Charles called her name or gently shook her, she didn’t even stir.

“She’s fainted from overwhelming grief,” the doctor said after checking her. “She needs some rest. Let her sleep, and once she wakes up and feels better, she’ll be alright.”
Charles asked, “What if her mood doesn’t improve?”
“That’s hard to say. Let’s wait and see. It shouldn’t be too serious,” the doctor replied.
With that, the doctor turned and walked out.
In the hospital room, Charles and Camila stared at each other, both at a loss.
“So what now? This was your lousy idea,” Charles said, his voice tense. “If Briana gets any more upset, she might really get sick or something.”
“I never thought it would end up like this,” Camila muttered, guilt written all over her face.
“Forget it,” Charles said, waving his hand. “When Briana wakes up, I’ll tell her it was all made up. I told the doctor to say that on purpose.”
Camila spoke up, her voice barely above a whisper, guilt written all over her face. “She might think you’re just saying that to make her feel better, that you’re lying to her.
“Maybe she’ll end up believing even more that there’s something wrong with her heart.”
Charles stared at her, mouth half–open, completely at a loss for words.
A few seconds later, he reached out and poked Camila on the forehead.
Camila dodged out of the way.
“I was trying to help, okay? We’re already this far. Why not keep up the act for a couple more days?” Camila suggested. “Just two days, it’s not going to hurt anything.”
Charles hesitated.
“It’s better than doing nothing at all. We’re already in this mess; if can’t get any worse,” Camila added.
Charles stayed silent.
“Come on, let’s treat this like a last–ditch effort,” Camila egged him on. “Otherwise, Mrs. Carter’s tears today would have been for nothing.”
After a moment, Charles asked, “What now?”

“Alright,” Charles agreed.
