“No, don’t you dare think like that, Shepard. You’re so strong. You’re going to make it. It’s okay, I’ll get the best doctors. You’ll be fine! Just hold on,” Briana said.
In the distance, the sound of an ambulance siren echoed, growing louder as it approached.
Briana’s face lit up with hope. “Can you hear that, Shepard? The ambulance is here, the doctors are coming! You’ll get help soon!”
Shepard parted his lips, struggling to get the words out. “Briana?”
“I’m here. It’s me, Briana,” Briana replied quickly. “Shepard, we’re husband and wife. We’ve got our whole lives ahead of us, and our baby, yes, our baby! Please, for our child, you have to stay alive, do you hear me?
“And Shepard, listen to me. If you make it through, I’ll reconcile with you. I promise I’ll never throw a tantrum or argue with you again. Whatever you say, I’ll do it. I’ll stay by your side forever. But if you don’t-”
Briana couldn’t bring herself to finish the sentence. She’d meant it as a threat, but she just couldn’t bear to say it out loud.
“I forgive you,” Briana sobbed. “Shepard, I don’t hate you anymore,”
She couldn’t stand the thought of someone who loved her so much leaving this world.
“Shepard!” Briana yelled.
Shepard’s eyes slowly closed, his hand dropping lifelessly.
“Shepard! Shepard!” Briana screamed. Her heart–wrenching screams tore through the night, sending chills down everyone’s spine.
The ambulance raced up, sirens blaring. Doctors and nurses leapt out and rushed over, quickly lifting Shepard onto a stretcher.
“Where’s the family?” a nurse shouted. “Get in the food truck now!”
‘Here!” Briana cried out. She clambered into the ambulance, desperate and awkward, barely caring how messy she looked.
She gazed at Shepard, her eyes swimming with tears, everything a blur. She didn’t dare blink, afraid that if she looked away for even a second, she might never see him again.
She couldn’t imagine life without him. She couldn’t bear to lose him.
“Excessive blood loss,” one of the doctors said. “Heartbeat is faint. Severe internal injuries.”
The medical team moved quickly and with tense focus, their faces grave as they tried everything to keep Shepard alive.
Briana’s heart felt like it was shattering into a million pieces. Her chest was riddled with pain, every breath aching.
But she knew Shepard was hurting even more than she was. He was bearing all this pain for her.
If Shepard hadn’t rammed her car off the road at the last second, that truck would’ve crushed her car instead.
Briana’s car was just a basic electric car, nothing special at all.
After fighting with Shepard over their divorce, Briana was broke and ended up buying the cheapest car she could find.

If that truck had slammed into her car, it wouldn’t just be the front that got smashed. Her whole ride would’ve been crushed like a tin can.
The Maybach was in a whole different league compared to her cheap little car.
When they got to the hospital, the doctors wasted no time getting Shepard onto a hospital bed.
ER staff were already at the entrance, bed at the ready, waiting to rush him inside. Everything was moving at lightning speed.
Briana ran after the doctors and nurses, following the stretcher, running and running.
Finally, they rushed into the ER, and the doors slammed shut behind them, leaving Briana locked out.
She collapsed to the floor, her legs giving out beneath her. She was completely drained, every ounce of strength gone.
With Shepard out of sight, it felt like everything Briana cared about had disappeared.
Briana stared in a daze at the glowing surgery light, lost and empty inside. All she could do was silently pray, again and again, in her heart.
She just wanted Shepard to survive. As long as he was alive, there was hope for everything.
Suddenly, Briana’s vision went black. She blacked out, her body going limp as she crumpled to the floor.
Briana was dreaming. It felt like a dream, but at the same time, it was so real.
Because in her dream, she was reliving the ten minutes right before the car crash.
She was driving, waiting at a red light, and just casually took a picture of the clouds to send to Shepard. Then the light turned green. She set her phone down and kept driving.
She remembered it clearly. Briana thought to herself, ‘Once I get past this intersection and the traffic clears up, I’ll check my phone again. I wonder what Shepard will say back.’
But suddenly, screeching brakes sounded, then the deafening roar of engines! All of it rushed at Briana at once, like a tidal wave threatening to swallow her whole.
Suddenly, something slammed into her car, sending it lurching forward, completely out of control.
“Shepard, Briana called out, her voice shaking. “You can’t die. You have to hang on. Our baby and I need you. Please, don’t leave us.”
“Shepard!” Briana kept calling out for Shepard, her throat so raw and hoarse.
Suddenly, a soft voice whispered gently beside her. “Briana, wake up. Don’t worry. It’s just a nightmare. You’re safe now. Come on, open your eyes. You’ve been out long enough.
“Briana, we’re all right here with you.”
A flash of white light swept across her vision, and Briana shot upright in bed.
She gulped in air, her mind still stuck in the nightmare she’d just escaped.

The place around her was completely unfamiliar.
It took Briana a while to find her voice, and when she finally did, she asked, “Where am I?”

As soon as she spoke, she realized her throat was unbelievably dry and raspy. It was so dry and sore, like it was about to split open. Even swallowing hurt.
“You’re in a hospital room,” Isabelle said softly. “Briana, you fainted.”
