Chapter 267
Chapter 267
The hospital room was quiet.
A group of doctors gathered around Shepard’s bed, discussing his injuries.
When the door opened, they all turned to look.
With all those doctors staring at her, Briana couldn’t help but feel intimidated.
Briana wondered, feeling uneasy under their gaze, ‘Is something wrong?
‘Is there more bad news?‘
“Mrs. Carter,” the attending doctor said, “Mr. Carter has woken up.”
“I know, that’s why I’m here,” Briana replied.
Upon hearing this, the doctors immediately stepped aside to let Briana through.
Shepard was lying on the hospital bed.
This time, his eyes were open.
Still, his gaze was a little unfocused.
He shifted his eyes, trying hard to focus on Briana.
He was so badly hurt, he couldn’t even move.
And since he had only just woken up, he was still really weak.
Shepard had been hanging on, refusing to pass out again, just because he had one thing on his mind.
He just wanted to see Briana.
Seeing her put his heart at rest, Briana slowly made her way to the side of the bed.
She crouched down, meeting his eyes.
Her tears fell in big, heavy drops down her cheeks.

“You’re awake… you’re finally awake,” Briana said, her voice trembling. “I’ve waited so long for this moment, just hoping you’d open your eyes.”
Shepard could barely force a weak smile.
He was too weak to even try to speak.
When he looked at Briana, her face was just a blur to him.
“I’m just so glad you’re awake. Things will get better now,” Briana murmured, clutching Shepard’s hand and pressing it to her cheek. “The baby and I are both safe and healthy, really, so don’t worry about us.
“You really are my hero, Shepard. You saved our baby and me. Right now, all I want is for you to get better, just focus on healing.
“I know you’re hurting, and your injuries are so serious… but that’s okay. We’ll take it slow, step by step. One day, you’ll be

back to yourself.
“If you can’t recover in a month, then two months. If two months isn’t enough, then half a year. As long as you’re still here with me, that’s all I care about.”
She kept nuzzling her cheek against the back of Shepard’s hand, again and again.
Shepard’s fingers twitched ever so slightly.
With great difficulty, he barely managed to say, “Okay.”
His breath misted up the oxygen mask as he spoke.
Briana smiled, her heart finally

ease.
‘He’s really alive, Briana thought, her heart finally settling with relief.
“You must be hurting so much, and you look exhausted,” Briana murmured gently. “Just close your eyes and rest. I’ll be right here with you. When you wake up, I’ll be right by your side.”
She could see that Shepard was struggling to stay conscious, fighting off sleep with everything he had.
His eyelids were so heavy, it looked like he could barely keep them open.
“Go ahead and sleep, Shepard. Rest easy. I’m right here,” Briana whispered, her voice soft and comforting.
Shepard’s eyes drifted shut.
Soon, his breathing grew steady.
Briana kept holding his hand, only letting go once she was sure he was sound asleep. Then she tucked his hand under the blanket, making sure he was covered up nice and snug.
She turned to the attending doctor.
“He’s out of danger now, right?” she asked, her voice trembling with hope. “He’s not in any more danger, is he?”
The doctor nodded firmly. He replied, “Yes. Now that Mr. Carter has woken up, he’s out of danger. As long as nothing unexpected happens, he’ll recover with some rest and care.”
Briana let out a sigh of relief and said, “I’ll take care of him, I promise. Nothing bad will happen to him.”
“Mr. Carter’s injuries are still very serious. He needs to rest, and we’ll have to change his bandages every day,” the doctor said. “But honestly, making it out of that wreck alive is nothing short of a miracle.”
After all, the truck rolled right over the Maybach.
The car was nearly squashed flat.
It was honestly a stroke of luck that he made it out alive.
Briana asked, “Will he have any lasting complications from this?”
“It’s possible his right hand won’t be as nimble as before,” the doctor replied. “With so many fractures, the effects on his body could be pretty serious and long–term. We’ll need to keep monitoring him for anything else.”
Noticing Briana’s concern, the doctor tried to comfort her, saying, “Please don’t worry, Mrs. Carter. We’ll do all we can for Mr. Carter’s recovery. Leave the medical stuff to us, just help him stay positive. His emotional state is a key part of his healing.”

Briana took a deep breath and nodded hard. “Alright, I’ll make sure to take care of him.”
Back in the room, the staff were gone.
Only Shepard and Briana remained.
Shepard was sleeping deeply.
An IV was still running, the medicine slowly seeping into his body.
Briana gently rested her hand on the back of his, softly caressing it again and again.
“We’re going to have a beautiful future. I know we will. We really will,” she said, her voice full of hope.
Olivia stood quietly at the doorway, watching everything unfold.
Seeing Briana and Shepard together, Olivia finally felt a bit of relief in her heart.
Olivia thought, ‘Let Briana stay by Shepard’s side.
‘Looks like there’s finally some hope. Maybe life can actually calm down now.’”
Olivia turned to leave, not wanting to interrupt their moment.
She had only taken a couple of steps when she spotted Richard and Isabelle.
“Mr. Carter, Mrs. Carter,” Olivia said. She hurried over to greet them. “You’re here!”
Isabelle’s face lit up with surprise and joy. She asked, “I heard Shepard woke up. Is that true?”
“Yes, really,” Olivia nodded and replied, “But he’s fallen asleep again, not sure how long he’ll sleep. Briana’s in the room with him.”
“Oh, that’s wonderful. That’s just wonderful,” Isabelle said, her voice full of relief.
She let out a long sigh of relief.
Her face lit up with joy.
