Chapter 298
Chapter 298

At Brocade Villa, Nina and Ryan had barely settled into their peaceful morning when the doorbell shattered the quiet.
Ryan went to answer it.
When Nina saw who it was, she couldn’t help but twitch her lips. “Wylder, do you have nothing better to do than keep tabs on me all day?”
She’d only arrived in the middle of the night, and now, barely after breakfast, Wylder was already on her doorstep.
He tracked her down with uncanny speed.
Wylder looked a little embarrassed. “What can I do? The higher–ups are breathing down my neck.”
Without waiting for Nina’s permission, Wylder just plopped himself down on the couch.
Ryan shot Wylder a glance and got up to brew some tea.
Nina put her book down, lounging by the window without even bothering to budge. “So, what do you want this time?”
‘Don’t play dumb with me,” Wylder glared at her. “The serum! The higher–ups keep pestering me, asking when you’ll finally get it done.”
Nina stared at Wylder for a good while, suspicion flickering in her eyes, before suddenly asking, “Wylder, have you ever wondered who Iris really is?”
Wylder looked genuinely puzzled. “Is there something off about her?”
Nina was totally at a loss for words.
The silence hung heavy in the air.
The room went dead quiet in an instant.
Wylder was totally lost.
He thought, ‘Here she goes with that look again.
Did I say something wrong?‘ he wondered.
After a long pause, Nina finally spoke up, her tone laced with sarcasm. “So, all that brainpower of yours is just reserved for me, huh?”
Wylder was left speechless.
It sounded like she was throwing shade at him, but he had no way to call her out on it.
Ryan handed Wylder a cup of tea, speaking earnestly. “Wylder, maybe have your people work on their professionalism instead of always watching my wife. If she ever wanted to turn on you, you guys wouldn’t even get the chance to notice.”
Wylder was left speechless.
These two are savage. They can diss me without even dropping a single curse, he thought.

Wylder let out a sigh. “Just spit it out.”

Nina arched an eyebrow, shooting Wylder a mocking look. “While we’ve already uncovered who was behind Scarlet’s kidnapping, you guys are still totally clueless about who Iris really is. You want me to lay it all out? Would you even understand if I did?”
Wylder was shocked.
He wasn’t just goofing off.
He really had been pulling out all the stops to find Ruby.
But based on everything they’d uncovered so far, there was nothing suspicious about Iris, and that was exactly why they needed Nina to finish the serum.
‘How did Nina manage to dig up the mastermind behind all this already? Wylder was floored.
‘Does that mean she’s already tracked down Ruby, too? Wylder thought, feeling a bit hopeless.
Wylder wasn’t even embarrassed about sucking up anymore. He buttered her up shamelessly, saying, “See? Only a genius like you could actually get things done. You’re a hacker with connections everywhere. Even with all our fancy equipment, we’re still miles behind you!”
It was not that they were useless.
Nina was just out of their league.
The organization got some serious tech whizzes, but when it came to unorthodox geniuses like Nina, they just couldn’t compete.
They were no slouches, but Nina was the type who always took the wild route.
Meanwhile, those guys were stuck following a bunch of rules, so everything took forever.
Nina gave him a half–smile. “Oh, so I’m actually useful, huh? So, Wylder, when are you going to pay me?”
Wylder replied, “Let’s settle it right now. How about 600 thousand for all your work these past few years?”
Before Nina could say anything, Wylder gave an awkward grin. “That’s the highest I could get approved for you.”
Honestly, the higher–ups only approved 200 thousand. He had to come up with the other 400 thousand himself.
Of course, it wasn’t really his own money. It was Quentin family cash.
His own salary could never cover that kind of cash.
The Quentin family had a company that’d been doing pretty well these past few years, so he got his son to transfer him 400 thousand.
“Well, well,” Nina teased, “Used your own stash for this, huh?”
Wylder was speechless.
‘Seriously, does she have to be this smart?‘ he grumbled to himself.
Seeing Wylder’s reaction, Nina decided to drop it. “Alright, I’m just kidding. I don’t want the money…”

Before she could finish, Wylder jumped in. “No way, you deserve every penny! I can’t let you work for the organization for free,”
Nina raised an eyebrow. “What you’re offering barely covers my pocket change.”
Wylder opened his mouth to say something, but Nina cut him off. “Alright, let’s get down to business. Turns out, it’s my grandpa behind all this!”
Wylder was shocked.
He blanked out for a second.
After a long, awkward pause, Wylder finally ventured, “Uh… do you mean your husband’s grandpa, your god–grandpa, or your foster sister’s grandpa?”
Nina was at a loss for words.
She was dying to snap back at him.
But she bit her tongue instead.
“Samuel! My actual grandpa!” Nina said, stressing every word.
‘Fine, whatever,‘ Nina thought.
Snapping back and forth with him would probably just end up with her getting burned.
Just let it go,‘ she told herself.
“What?” Wylder shot up from the couch like he’d been electrocuted. “Your actual grandpa? Wait. Wasn’t he supposed to be dead?”
Sure, there were all kinds of talk about mysticism in this world, but nobody had ever actually seen a real ghost.
Wylder had been around for ages, and he’d never actually seen one himself.
But now, it was like Nina was putting on a live ghost show right in front of him.
Nina pinched the bridge of her nose, looking helpless. “He’s not dead. He’s alive and well! This was all part of his plan. The Sherman Manor, Newton family, Rivers family, Goodwin family, and the Nicholson family… They’re all his people.
‘I haven’t checked if he’s got folks in other families yet. After I went to the Swanson family to claim my place, he took Scarlet away. From then on, anything about her was just Iris playing her part.”
