“I’m gonna
be gone most of the day,” I said, watching him munch contentedly. “There will be no fancy treats, no special attention. Just kibble and naps, okay?”
He barked like he didn’t mind.
“Maybe I should’ve left you where you were comfortable.” I muttered to myself.
Tiger leaned into my hand, and I smiled.
“I’ll be back early. Be good.” I promised and stood up.
I double–checked his food, water, and the lock on the window. He was trained, but this house was still a battlefield.
I grabbed my bag and stepped out, shutting the door softly behind me.

What do you think you’re doing, Violet?
Violet
I pushed open my bedroom door and headed downstairs. The house was silent. I was just about to step outside, until I froze.
My aunt sat on the couch, coffee mug in hand, legs crossed like she owned the whole damn world. Harper stood beside her, arms folded, glaring at me.
Perfect. Just what I needed to start the morning.
I considered turning around and going back to my room. It was too early for this kind of drama. But skipping school wasn’t an option, I was on scholarship. Every day mattered.
I angled toward the door, hoping I could just slip out, but Harper moved fast. Her fingers clamped around my wrist, nails digging into my skin.
“What do you think you’re doing?” I frowned. She just gave me that smug, condescending smile, the one that always made me want to slap it right off her face.
“I should be asking you that,” my aunt said, setting her coffee down. “What do you think you’re doing, Violet?”
I turned toward my aunt just as she rose from the couch. She walked up to me, stopped inches away, and before I could react, her hand came down hard across my face.
Crack.
A sharp sting exploded across my cheek, my head snapping to the side from the force. My skin burned, and I bit the inside of my lip to keep from reacting to her, but my eyes stung with tears.
I took a slow breath, steadying myself, my hands clenching at my sides. This wasn’t new. I was used to this. It had been worse in the past. I guessed old age must’ve finally kicked in for her.
Her fingers gripped my chin, yanking my face back toward her. Her nails/dug into my skin, forcing my gaze up to
meet hers.
“How dare you come back here,” she hissed, eyes blazing. “Do you have a death wish or something? Because if you were still in your right mind, you’d know better than to crawl back here. Or do you really believe I’m just all talk? Do you honestly think I won’t do anything to your brother, Sebastian?”
My heart dropped the moment she said his name.
She’d said a lot of cruel things to me over the years, done worse things too, but nothing ever hit harder than when she used him. My only weakness, the one reason I hadn’t burned this house down and walked away without a second glance.
Sebastian was the thread that stitched my entire soul together. And she knew that. That’s why from the very beginning, since the funeral, she’d used him like a leash to keep me in check.
Because what else could she really hold over me? I would never let them treat me like a maid in my own home if it weren’t for my brother. She knew I’d kneel. I’d crawl. I’d bite my tongue until it bled if that’s what it took to keep
him safe.
Her smile twisted slowly across her lips when she saw my expression. “We made a deal, Violet. A single, simple deal. I don’t touch your brother, I don’t get involved in his life, so long as the two of you disappear from our lives.”

“Why don’t you get it? You were doing quite well. You just had to keep being invisible. But here you are. And you know what happens if you start acting out, don’t you? I’ll send him away. You’ll never see him again. And there’s not much you can do. I’m his guardian.”
Anger surged in my chest. I wanted to hit her, and put her in her place, but I didn’t. Because if I did, she would make sure my brother pays for it.
I lowered my head.
“I’m sorry, aunt,” I said, quietly. “I’m only here because I have no other choice. As soon as I find an apartment, I’ll leave quietly. You won’t see me again.”
She studied me for a long moment, and then she stepped back, crossed her arms, and smirked. “It’s good you still have some sense in you. Although, maybe it’s not so bad that you’re here after all.”
I glanced up slowly.
She was walking back to the couch now, her voice too casual to be trusted. She sat down and crossed her legs.
“Riley and your exams are coming up,” she said, lifting her mug. “She’s having some trouble with her studies. You’re not completely useless, Violet. You’re intelligent. You can stay here and tutor her. Use some of that brain to make sure she passes.”
“I don’t think I can, I’m busy with my own exams, and I have multiple jobs to juggle….”
My aunt scoffed, as if I’d just told the funniest joke. She waved her perfectly manicured hand in the air. “It’s not like you’ll need proper grades, Violet. Let’s be honest, Riley needs them more than you. She’s going to run the hospital one day. And you’ll work under her. That’s your future. So tell me, who needs better grades, her, or you?”
Before I could even respond, Harper, still gripping my wrist, smiled sweetly. “Of course it’s Miss Riley. She’s meant for great things. Violet is just here to help her shine.”
I bit my bottom lip so hard I tasted blood.
Stay calm. Breathe. Don’t give her the satisfaction.
My aunt nodded, pleased with herself. “See? Even Harper gets it. Riley will take over the hospital. You’ll be there to assist, like a good little cousin. Understand?”
“Yes,” I said.
“Well, that’s good. I hope you manage your schedule properly for my daughter’s sake. You may leave now.”
Without looking at Harper, I said, “Let me go.”
Harper raised an eyebrow, clearly enjoying the show. “Why are you in such a rus-?”
“I won’t repeat myself again.” The look I gave her must’ve said enough, because she flinched. She let go of my
