Violet
My heart was pounding.
Was it excitement? Nerves? I couldn’t tell. But it was louder than everything around me.
Everyone’s faces flickered with shock, awe, annoyance, and even mockery. But none of it mattered, because for the first time today, I felt like I could finally breathe.
God, today had been hell. From the moment I opened my eyes, it felt like the entire world was lining up to slap me down. One humiliation after the next. One reminder after another that I didn’t belong, that I wasn’t enough, that I was just background noise in other people’s lives.
Nora was the first to recover. Her eyes widened, like she couldn’t quite believe I said it.“You’re serious about this?” she said with a smile. “You really want to break things up with Matthew?”
I scoffed. God, how could someone look that pretty and be so disgusting?
I looked her dead in the eye. “Yes. You can finally have him, Nora. I won’t stop you.”
Her lips twitched. Oh, she was thrilled.
“I mean… it’s not like that, Violet,” she said, blinking those innocent lashes. “Matthew and I are just friends.”
I tilted my head and gave her a mocking smile. “I don’t care what you are. You can have him now. If you’re that desperate to go that far, then congratulations. Matthew is all yours. I won’t be in your way anymore.”
Matthew looked like he’d just been slapped. He blinked and took a step forward, jaw tight. “Violet, you—”
But the man in the suit stepped in front of me. He gave a shallow bow. “Please, I’d advise you to stay away from her, sir.”
I felt a cold prickle race up my spine. Oh no.
Matthew’s expression darkened immediately. His jaw clenched so hard I thought I heard his teeth grind.
“Who the hell are you to order me around?” he growled. “Do you even know who you’re speaking to? Do you have a death wish?”
I expected the man to be scared, but the man didn’t even blink.
He smiled. “Mr. Matthew Sinclair, of course I know who you are, sir.”
Matthew stepped closer. “Then you better fuck off.”
The man remained still, his hands neatly folded in front of him. “And that is exactly why I’m still giving you respect. Because you’re one of the Sinclairs. If you were someone else, I would have had you escorted out, no matter who you were, sir.”
Matthew stared at him, clearly stunned. Even I blinked.
“And I’ll advise you to walk away, sir. Miss Violet is already someone you can no longer be interested in. She’s someone you cannot touch. Someone even you have to show respect to. Someone who is already out of reach.”
What the hell?
Who was Hades?
Who gave his messenger the confidence to say those words to Matthew Sinclair like it was nothing? Before

Matthew could recover, a sleek black car pulled up in front of the school.
The back door opened and a familiar man in a gray suit stepped out.
Matthew’s secretary.
He bowed slightly, quickly making his way to his boss. “Sir
Matthew snapped, “What is it?”
The secretary leaned in, whispering something urgently in his ear.
I watched as Matthew’s whole posture changed, his eyes widened slightly, then narrowed. He ran his hand through his hair, “Tch. So annoying.”
Matthew’s eyes bore into me. He was studying me now, the way someone studies a problem they still think they can fix.
“I don’t understand what’s going on,” he finally said, “But we’ll talk later when you are no longer dramatic. And you better give me a good explanation for this”
I frowned.
A good explanation?
Seriously? After everything, he still wanted explanations? What part of it’s over does he not understand?
I looked away, not bothering to answer. I was too tired to repeat myself to a man who never listened when it mattered.
If he wanted me so badly, he should’ve proved it when he had me.
Matthew shifted his glare toward the messenger. “Tell your boss, we’ll meet soon. Whoever he is, he dared touch my woman. I’ll make sure he regrets ever messing with a Sinclair.”
I could feel my stomach twist at his words. The messenger simply bowed slightly, a polite smile tugging at his lips. But even I could catch the flicker of amusement in his gaze.
Matthew didn’t wait for a response. He turned and walked back to his car. Nora and Riley walked back to the campus. If the messenger hadn’t been beside me, they probably would’ve started another fight.
Only a few people were left around the flower vans now, some taking pictures, others scooping up bouquets.
The moment I turned to the man beside me, he bowed his head again.
“Please, don’t do that. People will misunderstand.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
I shoved my hands into the pockets of my hoodie. “Where is he?”
“If you are referring to Mr. Hades, ma’am,” the man said calmly, “he left the country earlier today. There were matters that required his personal attention. He’ll be back soon.‘
He paused, then added with a slight smile, “I’ll let him know you wished to meet him because you missed-”
“I did not miss him,” I snapped, stepping back. “I didn’t ass because I wanted to see him.”
He raised a brow, clearly entertained. I was already regretting saying anything.
“And I definitely didn’t miss him,” I added firmly, trying to sound convincing, even though my ears were burning, and my heart might have jumped at the mention of him returning.

The man’s lips curved slightly. “Of course, ma’am.”
Ugh. That ma’am was starting to feel mocking now too.
