I was sitting across from Matthew at the dining table, absently twirling my fork in my pasta. Without thinking too hard about it, I looked up at him and asked.
“Matthew, who is Hades?”
The sound that came out of him wasn’t anything I’d ever heard before. His spoon clattered against the table, and he choked on his food.
“Matthew!” My chair scraped against the floor as I rushed around the table. He was coughing hard, his face pale, eyes wide in a way that made my chest tighten. I quickly grabbed a glass of water and pressed it into his hand.” Here, drink this.”
He snatched it up, gulping it down, his throat bobbing until the coughing finally subsided.
I knelt beside him, my hand rubbing soothing circles along his back. “Are you okay? What was that? I’ve never seen you so-” I hesitated. The word sounded strange on my tongue. “scared before.”
His breathing slowed, and he muttered hoarsely, “Thank you.”
I raised a brow, still crouched at his side, studying him closely. Something in his face unsettled me, and I pressed. “What happened? You were freaked out. Is it because of the name I mentioned?”
Matthew didn’t answer right away. He reached for a napkin, wiping his mouth slowly, like he needed the extra seconds to collect himself. When he finally lifted his gaze to mine, his eyes were darker than I’d ever seen them.
“Where did you hear that name?” he asked, his voice low.
I blinked, taken aback. “Oh, at the party today. I overheard some people saying it. And they all looked…” I trailed off, swallowing. “Well, they looked as scared as you do right now.”
He said nothing.
I forced a small laugh, trying to brush away the tension. “I don’t know why, but the name kind of stuck to me. Maybe because it’s the same name as the Greek god of death.”
A smile tugged at my lips as I rambled on, unaware of how grave Matthew’s expression remained. “I kept remembering it, I even thought about naming my child Hades someday.”
His sharp inhale made me falter, but I continued anyway, lost in my own fascination. “I mean, in Greek mythology, Hades is always compared to the devil because he ruled the underworld, but I never saw him that way. Out of all the gods, he felt the most… honest. He was true to himself, even if people hated him for it. And despite everything, he still won the love of kind Persephone. I’ve always admired that part.
I laughed softly again, shaking my head. “I don’t know. Maybe it’s weird, but I kind of love that name.”
I looked down at Matthew, but he wasn’t smiling.
Instead, his hand trembled on the napkin, knuckles pale. His lips were pressed into a thin line, and his eyes looked like they were staring at something I couldn’t see.
“Matthew?” I whispered.

He cut me off. “That name… be careful when you say it.”
I blinked, staring at him. “What are you saying?”
He didn’t answer my question. Instead, his hand reached out and closed around mine, making me flinch.
“Violet,” he said. “That man, don’t even go near him. Don’t think about him. Anything associated with him is bad news.”
I tilted my head at him. Matthew never acted like this.
“Matthew…” I whispered, searching his face, “what’s wrong with you?”
He exhaled, as if deciding something. “You know what,” he muttered, pulling his phone from his pocket, “let me show you a picture. It’ll be safer that way.”
I watched as he placed the phone on the table. He unlocked it, then tapped into a private folder I hadn’t seen before. There was only one picture inside.
When he clicked on it, I froze.
My breath caught in my throat as my eyes widened. The world seemed to narrow until all I could see was the man staring back at me from the photograph.
Oh God.
Was I cheating on Matthew by thinking this stranger was the most attractive man I had ever seen in my life? Because that was the truth.
The photo looked like it had been taken secretly, maybe from across a coffee shop. The man wasn’t even posing, yet his eyes were staring right at the camera, as if he could sense it. A lazy smirk curled on his lips, his hand running through thick black hair like he had all the time in the world.
Breathtaking. That was the only word for him.
And yet, while Matthew was staring at the picture with fear, I was staring at it with something else.
My cheeks reddened with guilt, and I quickly looked away, biting my lip hard. What was wrong with me?
Matthew’s hand squeezed mine again, dragging me out of the trance.
“This is what he looks like,” Matthew said. “Hades Sinclair. The first son of the Sinclair family, and the most dangerous, insane man on earth.”
My eyes widened.
Hades Sinclair?
That meant… Matthew’s adoptive father.
I swallowed hard, my thoughts scattering. I had heard rumors about Matthew’s adoptive father before. At his grandfather’s house, people only mentioned him in hushed voices, like an omen. They had painted a picture in my head, old, cold, boring. The opposite of Roman, Matthew’s elegant uncle,
But now, seeing him, young, striking, dangerously attractive, everything I thought I knew shattered.
How could an omen look like this?
“If you ever see him,” his voice dropped lower, almost a plea, “run, Violet. Don’t let him get close.”

I looked at Matthew. His face was tense. He was dead serious.
He’d only met his adoptive father once, hadn’t he? What could have happened in that one encounter to make him so terrified?
I didn’t ask. The fear in his face told me this wasn’t the moment to press.
So instead, I forced a small smile, nodding gently. “Don’t worry, Matthew. I doubt I’ll ever meet him. Thank you for warning me.”
He looked relieved as he finally let go of my hand.
When he looked away, I couldn’t help glancing back down at the phone.
Hades Sinclair.
