Let’s eat breakfast

Violet

Naomi was saying something, her cheerful voice flowing in the background, but I wasn’t listening. My attention was on the house.

Woah.

Just when I thought no mansion could outdo Matthew’s, this one proved me wrong. The house was both massive and elegant, with paintings on the walls that probably cost more than my life. It was the kind of place you could easily get lost in if you weren’t careful.

I shouldn’t have been surprised. I’d wondered about Hadeswealth before, but after learning who he truly was, it all made sense. Of course he lived like this. The Sinclairs weren’t just rich, they were old money. So rich that even other wealthy families looked like pocket change beside them. And from what I’d learned, Hades left home young, cutting ties with his own father, yet still managed to build an empire of his own. Some even said his fortune had surpassed the Sinclair family itself.

Here we are,Naomi’s voice snapped me out of my thoughts.

I turned to her, a little confused. She stood in front of a long dining table, smiling proudly. What do you think of the light breakfast?she asked, gesturing to the table. I made everything we had in the house. I wanted to go out for more groceries, but I thought it might be too late, and you might get hungry, darling.

I turned to look at the food, and froze.

Oh my god.

Was this breakfast or a royal banquet? Pancakes were stacked high, bowls of porridge, roasted meat, grilled fish, fresh fruit, bread rolls, even dishes I couldn’t name. The table was probably groaning under the weight of the food.

My mouth opened a little. Did she just call this a light breakfast? This could feed a whole country.

I turned back to her smiling face, completely lost. Tthis is too much. And besides, I don’t think I can stay for breakfast. I have to go home. My family would be worried about me.

That was a big fat lie. Nobody at home would notice if I was gone. My aunt and her daughter were probably happy they couldn’t see my face, but it was the perfect excuse to slip away politely.

Naomi’s face fell. The cheerful sparkle vanished, replaced by the saddest frown I’d ever seen. Well, that is a shame. I woke up so early to cook breakfast, when I heard that Mr. Hades brought a woman here for the first time. I cooked everything to make you happy and leave a good impression of me.

Fuck

She sighed, clutching her lower back. My back is still aching from cooking so much food. I’m an old woman, after all, not as youthful as I was. I’m even one step to the grave.

My jaw dropped slightly. How had just saying no turned into this?

Naomi gave me another sad little look, her lips trembling just the right amount. But it’s alright, dear. I know your family must be worried. I will eat everything myself.

I closed

my eyes and groaned inwardly. Damn it. I hated that I had a soft spot for older people, and Naomi knew exactly how to play me. That pitiful expression was lethal.

I bit my lip. I was definitely going to regret this.

I opened my eyes, looked at her, and sighed in defeat. OhI can still stay for a few minutes. We shouldn’t waste the food.

In an instant, Naomi’s entire demeanor changed. The sadness vanished, replaced by a beaming smile as if the frown had never existed. Oh, that is wonderful! I can’t wait for you to try my cooking!

I sank a little inside. I’ve been played.

But you should probably call your family, and let them know you’ll be a little late coming home. They could probably get worried. She said. Your phone is on the counter, dear.

I followed where she pointed, and sure enough, my phone sat on the counter. My lips were dry, so I licked them nervously before nodding. I’ll let them know now.

Naomi’s smile widened, as if she had just solved the biggest problem in the world. She gave a satisfied nod.

I walked over and picked up my phone. It felt strangely heavy in my hand. I had kept it on silent all night, completely forgetting about it, and when I turned the screen on, I wasn’t surprised by the flood of missed messages. Most were from Penelope and Kai but I ignored them for now and looked at one in particular.

Evil Hag.

That’s what I had saved my aunt’s number as.

I opened the messages, already bracing myself.

[ I don’t give a fuck where you might have went to. If you like, you can be selling your body to an older man or be out doing drugs with your crazy friends, but your uncle asked for you a while ago. Next time you are leaving the house, leave a message so I wouldn’t have to bother myself with you. And don’t bother coming home to eat breakfast, because we are not waiting for you.]

I stared at the message emotionlessly.

Like I said, no surprise. My heart didn’t even ache anymore. I’d gotten used to this tone, and the kind of treatment. If there was ever a day they’d care about me, it would probably be the day I died. Until then, I was just an inconvenience.

Darling,Naomi’s voice came softly from behind me. What did they say?

I turned off my phone with a click, and kept it back on the counter. They said I can stay.

I turned toward the table, and froze for a second.

Hades was already sitting there. I didn’t even know when he had walked in. One arm draped casually over the back of the chair, the other resting on the table, drumming his fingers causally. His eyes were closed, as if he was in thought, but his lips were curled in that cruel smile that always made my stomach twist.

Slowly, his eyes opened, cutting right into me.

Come on, princess,he drawled. Let’s eat breakfast.

I should have ignored him. But for some reason, those simple words made something inside me ease, as if, in his own twisted way, he was telling me I wasn’t alone.

And it made me feel better.

I think I might have died, gone to heaven, and come back to earth.

That was the only explanation.

I blinked, staring at nothing in particular, the spoon still hanging near my mouth. I sipped the last bit of juice from the spoon, savoring it. Yes. This was it. Death, heaven, resurrection, all in one bite.

Naomi’s hands gripped her apron tightly as she stood a few feet away, watching me nervously. What happened? Is it bad?

I looked at her, blinked again, then set the spoon down on the table. My mouth fell open in a soft gasp.

Naomi’s eyes widened, her hand flying to her chest as if she had failed me. Even Hades turned his head slightly, curiosity flickering in his eyes.
