I’ll send the money back
Violet
I didn’t need to think about it. I already knew.
There was only one person insane and rich enough that even twenty million dollars didn’t mean anything.
Hades Sinclair.
I gripped my phone so tightly my knuckles went white, forcing a deep breath before turning my gaze to Alec. “Do you know about this?”
Through the rearview mirror, his blue eyes flicked to mine. His brow arched lazily. “About what?”
I shoved my phone up toward him. “Your boss just sent me twenty million dollars.” My free hand went to my forehead. “Why would he do that? No, he probably didn’t even mean to send this much, maybe it was a mistake-‘

“Ah, that,” Alec cut in, so calmly it made me want to scream. “According to him, it was payment for last night. He actually wanted to send more, but I told him it might freak you out. Or, was it too little? Maybe I should’ve gone with his idea to send more instead.”
I stared at him.
What the fuck was I listening to? Was this some kind of bad script for a movie where the powerful male lead spent obscene amounts of money on the heroine like it was pocket change?
They were talking about it like Twenty million dollars was nothing.
My chest tightened. I thought Alec was better than Hades. He had this calm presence that felt almost familiar, but no, he was the same.
When I agreed to go with Hades to that event, I thought he’d pay me a reasonable amount. Maybe a few thousand. It might be enough to cover my brother’s trip, which was literally today.
I’d saved as much as I could, but it wasn’t even close. And I refused to touch the money I had tucked away for his future. And yet here I was, staring at twenty million fucking dollars in my account.
Alec’s voice broke through my thoughts. “Is there a problem?”
I shook my head quickly, shutting my eyes for a moment. I didn’t have the time or strength to argue with either of them. “Please,” I muttered, voice low, “give me Hades’s account number, or yours. I’ll send the money back.”
For the first time, Alec actually looked surprised. His gaze lingered on me in the mirror before his lips curved into a small smile. “He was right about you.”
My eyes narrowed. “What?”
“He said you’d refuse the money.” Alec’s tone was casual, but I caught a hint of approval in it.
If Hades knew I would refuse it, then what was the point of sending it in the first place?
“Then this should be simple,” I muttered. “Let me resend it.”
Alec shrugged lightly, eyes still on the road. “He also said he wanted you to be greedy.”
I froze.

Alec chuckled softly, glancing at me again through the mirror. “He said it in a more smug and arrogant way. But his words were that you shouldn’t overthink everything, live freely, and do whatever you want. After all, human lives are short.”
I didn’t know what to say.
Was that even possible?
That kind of life ended for me a long time ago, ever since I had to grow up too quickly and act like an adult for Sebastian’s sake. My choices stopped being mine.
I sighed, pressing my lips together.
And yet, whenever I was with Hades, I couldn’t stop myself from wanting that impossible life. I wanted to be greedy, and choose myself first, even if just for a moment.
My eyes flicked to the time on my phone; it was just a few hours left before Sebastian’s payment deadline closed.
I bit my lip.
I could take just the right amount. Five hundred thousand would cover the trip. I could give him what I earned to enjoy himself and do whatever he wanted.
But even that thought didn’t sit right with me. It was still too much. And after I poured water over Hades’s head? Taking his money now made me feel like a hypocrite. My face flushed. Maybe I shouldn’t have snapped like that.
I closed my eyes, exhaling.
No, Sebastian mattered more than my pride.
“Can I have the account number?” I asked quietly. “I’ll take what I need.”
For a moment, Alec just looked at me through the mirror, then he recited the number.
I typed it in, and sent back 19,500,000.
A ding came from Alec’s phone. He glanced at the screen, then chuckled low. “Just five hundred thousand?”
I nodded as the car slowed to a stop in front of my uncle’s house.
My hand lingered on the door handle. “Thank you again, Alec. And thank him for me too.”
He turned his head. “I will.”
I was about to step out when his voice stopped me.
“And, Violet.”
I looked back at him, wary. “Yes?”
