Chapter 86

Violet

My uncle paused. “Impossible… Sebastian is in a coma? What happened to him? How can he be in a coma?”

“Ask your daughter,” I spat back. “She knows what she did.”

My uncle looked at Riley. She shook her head fast, her face pale. My aunt jumped in before he could even think. “What the hell are you talking about? Why would Riley be at fault for your brother being in a coma? We had no idea what happened to him to begin with. Don’t blame others because you can’t handle what’s going on with your brother.”

Julian tightened the hold on me and I twisted against it, but it did no good. I was held firmer. I forced the words out anyway. “Your daughter threatened me. She threatened to harm Sebastian yesterday. She must have made someone do something to him.”

The room went silent. My uncle looked torn, like he didn’t know who to believe anymore. Nora scoffed and spoke up. “Is that your evidence?” Everyone turned to look at her. She kept going. “Because she threatened you, are you even making any sense? I doubt she threatened you, and even if she did, why would she do something like that? You’re being delusional, Violet.”

Riley bobbed her head quickly at Nora’s words. “Right. It makes no sense.”

I clenched my fists until my nails dug into my palms, my breath coming fast. I was trying so hard not to cry, the anger too much to hold in. I looked at my uncle, my voice shaking. “They said he fell from a window. He jumped. That’s what the police are saying, Uncle.”

“Does that make any sense? Why would Sebastian jump out a window? He is not suicidal. Please believe me, Riley has something to do with it. She made someone push Sebastian and now they’re trying to pass it off as suicide. My brother would never kill himself.”

My chest felt like it would split. “It’s not fair,” I blurted. “Why should he have to go through this? Why should he get hurt only to be blamed for wanting to die?”

My uncle’s face fell. There was a sad look in his eyes. He took a step forward like he might grab me, but my aunt gripped his arm and stopped him.

“Don’t tell me you honestly believe that girl, honey,” she said, voice full of disbelief. “Riley is not at fault. Do you think someone as innocent as our daughter would do something like that? She is lying.”

Everyone was staring at my uncle now. Even Riley stopped pretending to cry for a moment, waiting to see what he would say. I looked at him too, my chest tightening. I didn’t know why, but I wanted him to believe me. I wanted him to look me in the eye and tell me I wasn’t crazy.

He was the only family member who had ever been kind to me. The only one who had taken my side, even if it was in small ways. He wasn’t perfect, but he wasn’t cruel like the rest. If anyone would try to see the truth, I thought it would be him.

For a moment, his gaze met mine. I held on to it, my heart racing, but he looked away.

“Violet, you’re probably mistaken about this situation.”

His words stabbed through me. My whole body went still. My heart dropped so hard it felt like I couldn’t breathe.

I saw my aunt smile out of the corner of my eye.

“I know my daughter,” my uncle said. “Riley is not the type of person to do something like that. You need to relax. What you should be doing right now is not making a scene, but focusing on helping your brother. I know many doctors who specialize in coma patients. I will call them, I’ll make sure they treat him. And even when he wakes up, I’ll arrange therapy for him. So

please, don’t throw blame without proof.”

I just stared at him, my lips parting, but no sound came out. My eyes felt dry and wide, my chest hollow. Around me, I could feel everyone waiting for me to scream, and cry like a broken child. But instead, something else came out. A sound that surprised even me.

A laugh.

It started small, just a chuckle at the back of my throat. Then it grew louder, spilling out until it echoed through the living room. I couldn’t stop. I laughed harder and harder, my body trembling.

Julian’s face shifted in surprise above me, his grip loosening for a moment. Even he hadn’t expected that.

My uncle raised a brow, confused. My aunt frowned. Riley flinched. The whole room went silent at the sound of my laughter.

I shook my head slowly, still laughing. “What was I expecting from an adult? Every adult in my life has failed me. And I thought, you’d be different? I thought maybe, you would believe me. But I shouldn’t have expected anything more.”

The laughter died down, but the hollow ache inside me only grew.

My uncle sighed, his voice softer. “Violet, I—”

I ignored him. My eyes slid to Julian. “Get off me.”

Julian swallowed hard. For the first time, I saw hesitation flicker in his expression. Then he stepped back.
