My heart trashed violently in my chest as I waited for his response. Maybe I shouldn’t have answered the way I did! was already confrontational when I wasn’t sure if it was my father.
There’s a muffled noise in the background on the other end of the line, like cars and people murmuring.
“You already know what I want,” my father’s raspy and menacing voice filled the line.
Fear pounded in my chest, and the edges of my phone dug into my palms as I clutched it tightly. He’s the villain in th story, and I should be wise in dealing with him if I want to win. My father spent the last six years planning how he’d g to my family and me. He’s a different man, more dangerous. The photo he sent me was a testament to how different The old version of him that we sent to prison wouldn’t even think of theatrics. He punches and kicks and spits wound words, but he wasn’t smart enough to hide the evidence of his crimes. It’s the very reason why we easily put him in ja he knows how to sneak into our home undetected.
I swallowed my dignity and stayed silent. For now, this is all I could do.
“You want to break me,” I said. “How will you even break something that’s already broken beyond repair?”
I don’t know how else he was gonna break me. He’s done everything from turning me into a punching bag, starving m locking me in a dark basement for days. He made me who I am: physically and emotionally broken.
His chuckle reminded me of the sinister laugh in a horror movie. “Don’t worry about that. I got everything planned ou I will enjoy every moment of breaking you, little pest.”
I plopped into my bed. It was quiet outside, and the background noise on his end sounded like he was in the city. He w from home. That’s better.
I lay my back on the bed, blinking into the darkness. “Why are you doing this?” just out of curiosity. “You’re out, why do you start over and just leave us alone?”
He scoffed. “I will only move on with my life once I see you suffer as I did.”
“You were hurting us,” I said. “You abused us. You deserved to be punished for that.” The words were out of my mouth before I could even weigh it. I shouldn’t poke the monster, but he just brings all this anger from the past, along with the worst in me.
“I deserved it?” he gasped, stunned. Then his voice went back to its sinister tone. “You ruined my life, so it’s only fair that 1 ruined yours,” he explained as if that excused everything he did to us. “Now here’s the first thing I want you to do”
I bit my lip and listened keenly. “I want you to tell your boyfriend to pull out the security he has stationed in your house “What?” I frowned in nothingness. “Security?”
His chuckle was humorless and deep. “Yes, you heard me. I don’t think your boyfriend trusts you, little pest.”
Beckett hired people to watch over our house? He didn’t tell me about that, and my father heard the surprise in my words. He’s hanging it over my head like a punchline.
“It… those people are for paparazzi,” I reasoned.
“I don’t give a fuck,” he said. “I want them gone.”

“Why would I do that?” I huffed. “You just violated my Mom’s privacy by taking her picture in her sleep. Those security people will keep you from doing that again.”
His rage vibrated through the line. “If you don’t do as I say, I will make sure you regret it, pest.” He took in a huge breath preparing himself for the huge bomb he’s about to drop. “I might not be able to go inside your house anymore, but out! That’s a different topic. Maybe I’ll start with Caleb. His school bus leaves at six forty–five in the morning, and he comes home at four. Your mom… Don’t even get me started with her. She doesn’t even bother looking over her shoulder when in the market-”
“Stop!” I hissed. He’d been watching us, and it’s wise just to do as he says. “Just stop, okay? I will do it, but don’t you ever show your face to Caleb and Mom.”
He laughed as though he won the lottery. “I want them gone tomorrow.”
“Fine!” I groaned.
“I’m not yet done,” he cut in.
“What? Do you want me to give you the key to our home now?” I fired back.
“That’s a good idea,” he offered. “But I don’t need it. What I need is cash.”
Why am I not surprised? I had thought about money being involved in his demands. He doesn’t know a thing about earn money, even if his life depended on it. All he knew was to get drunk, smoke, eat, and get wasted.
“I don’t have money,” I said flatly.
“Your boyfriend does,” he said so casually, it makes me sick to even hear it.
“I’m not taking money from him!” Does everyone think that I am here for Beckett’s money?
“I don’t care how you get me my money, little pest,” he was slowly losing his patience. “Five grand on Friday, or else you’ll know how serious I am about breaking you.”
“Five… Five grand in five days?” I pushed off from the bed and sat up, my head spinning just thinking about how absurd hi demand was. “What you’re asking me isn’t just insane, it’s impossible!”
How am I gonna get that amount of money in five days? I had already maxed out my salary from Siobhan to cover my school fees, and the salary I got from Beckett went entirely to Mom’s medication and Caleb’s school.
I can hear the smile in his response. “Like I said, I don’t care how you get me my money,” he cooed. “I know it’s not easy, bu it’s not impossible, darling pest,” he trailed off. “The answer is just lying inside your bedside drawer.”
I frowned at the drawer in question. As if he could see my confusion, he said. “Let me give you hints. It’s small, it’s black, an it has your boyfriend’s name.”
Dread turned my blood ice cold. He’d been inside my room, and he saw Beckett’s black card. What else did this man do inside our home? I feel sick that my stomach caved; the dinner I ate wanted to crawl back where it came in.
“Friday, if not. You know what will happen.” He ended the call before I could even negotiate anything
