Chapter 124
Chapter 124
-Beckett-
“Luna stayed back?” Jack asked as we trudged through the forest behind the mansion.
量
Maple and Storm were walking ahead of us, while River was walking beside me. These three dogs were not just pets; they were trained to protect me at the first sign of danger, and this was their position each time we’d take our morning run.
“Yup, didn’t hear any complaints,” I said. The grass had already drenched the soles of my shoes. The sun had just risen, and leaving Andi was the last thing I wanted to do.
I’m grateful that Luna is working with me on this case. She’s as good in combat as Jack, Reed, and Dean.
“Huh, that’s a first,” Jack commented with a cluck of his tongue.
And like Jack, I was surprised that Luna volunteered to stay behind. I’ve known Luna for over two decades now, and she hates being left behind by the boys. She was your typical feminist, who always thinks that our decision for her to stay behind is because she’s a girl, and not because she’s capable of protecting the people behind.
“She must like Andi’s company,” I offered. I can now hear the rush of water from the stream up ahead. “And I told her Andi makes good food.”
Jack chuckled. “Luna and food. She’d been complaining about our takeouts for the past three weeks.”
I shook my head. “I fear she might steal Andi from me once she tastes her food.”
Jack’s laugh echoed through the forest as he held his tummy and threw his head back. “You really think she’s gay?”
I shrugged my shoulders. “I don’t give a shit if she’s gay.” I said. It has always been a subject of our conversation: Luna’s identity. She’s that no boyfriend since birth kind of woman, not for the lack of suitors, but she said she doesn’t have time for relationships. “But she can’t take away my Andi,” I added.
We finally reached the running water and followed up upstream. The water glistened in the sun’s light. Maple and Strom were already treading through the crystal–clear stream. River stayed beside me. He’s always the obedient one, and he just barks as his brother and sister play like kids in the water.
We walked for a little longer until we reached the waterfall upstream.
I whistled and called Maple and Storm. “Stay,” I commanded the three dogs to stay outside the waterfall. I don’t need them to see whatever was waiting for us inside.
They barked at me simultaneously, as though they were protesting.
Maple lolled her tongue while Storm whined. River sat on her haunches and gave me those googly eyes.
“No. Stay. Wait here.”
I turned around, and we scaled the cliff, then walked through the opening between the boulders and the waterfall.
The mist coming off the water was cold against my skin. We passed through a dark cave. Jack opened the flashlight on his phone to light our way. If it were me, I would walk through this passage in the dark.
I could hear the muffled barks of the dogs as our footsteps echoed against the cave’s stone walls, then we finally reached a huge, open space where Reed and Dean were waiting for us.

Chapter 124
“Bons Reed greeted while Dean placed his gun on the stone bench carved on the side of the dome.
Natural light was coming from the opening above the cave. There were trees towering at the opening, completely concealing the place from unwelcome visitors.
The dome was chilly from the air rushing through the cave. If you’re not familiar with the place, you might get lost in the
maze of a cave.
There was a man sitting in a wooden chair in the middle of the dome. The working table at the side housed different knives, guns, and tools, a few already bearing blood from the unconscious man tied to the chair.
His hands and feet were tied to the chair with cable ties. His upper body was bare, and he was only wearing black boxer shorts. There are tattoos and scars on his skin, and his ribs can already be seen through his skin.
Anger instantly boiled inside me as I stared at this man’s face. I couldn’t forget how he fooled me on the beach. He used that old, frail body to make me think he was harmless. I even invited him to dinner and to my games.
The report I got this morning didn’t just mention Lucas Santiago. Reed had informed me that this man tried to sneak into Andi’s house. They took him into captivity and brought him here for questioning.
I told them not to touch the man until we found out who was helping him, but he proved to be a threat to Andi and her family, so we need to make sure he can’t hurt them anymore
“Did you find out who Lucas Santiago is?” I asked Reed.
He shook his head. “We only found a number on his phone, sending him instructions on what to do with Andi. I’m still tracing the number, but I don’t think it will lead us anywhere. Reed explained, pointing towards the open laptop and power station on one side of the cave
“Wake him up.” I instructed
Dean moved and went to Matias. He gripped Matias‘ hair and tilted his head upward, landing a solid punch on the old man’s guts.
Matias choked on air and coughed his way around the rough of his throat. Dean released his hair, allowing Matias to gather his bearings. Now that the old man was awake. I got a good view of his swollen cheeks.
Reed and Dean already did a number on him, but I can’t bring myself to feel compassion for him.
I still don’t know how he abused Andi when she was young. All I had was the case report from six years ago, and my blood was already boiling in molten rage.
“You,” Matias rasped, spitting blood on the cave floor.
I crossed my arms over my middle and raised an eyebrow at him, sizing him up. According to the file we have on him, he was now in his late fifties, but he looked like he was in his late sixties. His prison time made him old, deepening the worry and frown lines on his face.
“The little pest finally begged for your help, huh?” he spat out, my fist clenching at how he addressed Andi.
I dismissed his insults to Andi and dropped my hand to my side as I went towards the wooden table with knives, guns, and whips. I ran my hand over the rusty cutting tools, stopping at the machete, and picked it up.
“My men have already asked you this question, but you don’t like making things easy for yourself, do you?” I started, testing the machete’s weight. The blade was covered in rust, and if I use it on Matias, he will not die from the blade but from infection. “Who is Lucas Santiago?”

Matias groaned, tugging on the zip ties that held him to the chair. “I will tell you the same thing I told these assholes. I don’t
know who he is!”
I dropped the machete on the table, and its loud thud echoed through the dome. The tools rattled, and that stopped Matias from trying to break free from the chair.
“I think you do, Matias,” I said, and ran my fingers over the tools one more time. This time I stopped at the wrench, testing its weight as I lifted it up. “You just need help in remembering who he is.”
Matias shook his head. “No!” he yelled. “I really don’t know who he is. I saw him once in prison when he told me he’d help me get out.”
“See?” I rolled the wrench in my hand, swinging it side to side as I faced Matias. “We’re already getting there, and I haven’t done anything yet!” I chuckled.
Jack, Dean, and Reed stood on the sideline, watching me taunt Matias.
“My skills are a bit rusty,” I admitted, “so you’ll have to forgive me. I turned my back on this kind of work a long, long time ago,” I narrated, “but when I found this cave, I couldn’t let it go. It’s like it calls to me, you know, that I might need it someday. And look at us, right? We’re here in this cave,” I said, and started to circle Matias. “Isolated, alone, and no one will hear you if I do this!” I slammed the wrench into his knees.
It’s like hitting a hundred – mile – per–hour baseball pitch, only I was hitting downside instead of swinging sideways.
I heard the crack of his bones follow the slamming of the wrench. Matias hollered in pain, yet the waterfall outside the cave muffled his screams.
I let him wallow in losing his ability to walk straight. I let him whimper and cry like a fucking baby as images of little Andi crying because of this man drizzled fuel on the burning anger inside me.
I tapped the wrench on my hand, getting used to its weight as I circled Matias once more.
“I’m gonna ask you again, Matias,” I murmured. “If you still care for your other knee, you will answer me truthfully, hm? Who is Lucas Santiago?”
“I swear I don’t know. I’ve only seen him once in prison, and he’d been sending me instructions on what he wants me to do to the little pest-”
I didn’t let him finish insulting Andi. I swung the wrench and slammed it on his left wrist. His bones cracked, and his scream was quiet as tears rolled down his bloody cheeks.
“What did you call her?” I smirked at Matias, leveling my face with his.
“Andi! Andrea… Andrea,” he wailed like a bitch.
I smirked, satisfied with his pain. Andi didn’t have me before, but now she has me to protect her from people like Matias.
“What exactly did Lucas want with Andi?” I asked, drumming the wrench in my hand as I stared down at this man.
“I don’t know,” Matías cried, trying to pull away from me by pushing his uninjured legs on the floor. As if he could run away from this cave. As if he would come out of this situation unscathed. “All he told me was I need to ruin Andi. I need to make sure she’s not good enough for anybody else!”
I frowned at Matias. I could think of someone who would want to do that Andi. So I pulled out my phone and searched for Carter’s face, then showed it to Matias.
“Is this Lucas Santaigo?” It was a long shot, but I had to know.

Matias squinted his swollen eyes at the photo of Carter, and he shook his head no. “No. I can…. I can describe his face to you, just don’t kill me, please…” he begged. “I only did it for money. He promised me I could start over if I did what he asked.”
I raised an eyebrow at him, suspicious of every word that came out of his mouth.
“I never meant to hurt my family. Mr. Hale. I just made Andi think I was gonna hurt them,” Matias grumbled, sobbing like a child. “I only want to start over, a second chance at life, so please, I can help you find Lucas Santiago if you promise to let me go.”
