Chapter 125

-Beckett-

56 youchers

I was rusty. My interrogation skills had been dormant, and I thought I wouldn’t need to use them ever again.

I had turned my back on the family business long before I started playing professional baseball. I want a normal life, even a simple one would do, as long as it’s far from blood and illegal dealings. But I guess life has a way of pulling you back where you belong, no matter how hard you try to escape the life your family has lived for generations.

But it doesn’t take a genius to know that everything that comes out of Matiasmouth was all bullshit. He’d say anything to stay alive and get out of this mess, but I’d like to be entertained. How far would Matias go to stay alive?

I dropped the wrench with a thud on the ground, gripping Matiashair and landing a punch on his face. I stared into his eyes, looking deep into the soul of the monster who was still using Andi up to this very moment.

He wants to start a new life?I gritted my teeth. If he wanted to start a new life, he should have stayed in prison and served his sentence.

You think that would work?I slammed my fist into his stomach. You think you can take back what you did to Andi?Punch. You. Fucking. Bastard!I punctuated each word with a strike on his body until my knuckles were covered in his dried blood.

Pleasehe grunted, blood dripping from his mouth. I promise, I will tell you everything I know! Just don’t kill me!

I released his hair and glared at him over the tip of my nose.

Well, go on. Tell me what he looks like,I urged him, tipping my head towards Reed. He followed suit, opened a program on his laptop, and listened to Matias.

Wawater. I need water,he cleared his throat, swallowing through the dryness in his pipes. Please. Can you please give me water? It’s not easy to speak when you’re thirsty.

As I said, this man was all bullshit, but I humored him, nodding at Jack.

Jack grabbed a bottle of water from the duffel bag stashed next to the table Reed was using. He unscrewed the cap and offered it to Matias.

Like a dog, Matias tipped his face up, gulping the water from the bottle as it overflowed from his mouth. He coughed as the water dampened his parched throat.

I watched him recover his bearings, and he offered me a grateful smile. That smile fooled me once, and I won’t allow that to happen again.

I cast a glance at my watch. You’ve got thirty seconds before I change my mind, Matias.

Matiaseyes widened, tripping over his words. Hhow do I start?his gaze bounced between Reed and me.

Just describe his face,” Reed said in a flat tone.

Uhmhis hair is brown, short, and curly. His eyes are round and brown; his nose is narrow, his cheeks hollow, and he has an ear piercing. I remember it was green, tiny, stud,he mused, as though he took a walk down memory lane.

What about tattoos? His accent? Height and body built,Reed said, his eyes focused on his laptop as his fingers ghosted the keyboard.

Chapter 125

He has a halfmoon tattoo on his left neck, and the letters DEATH on the fingers of his left hand. He stood at least five feet five, skinny, and his skin was pale white, and he had a thick Mexican accent.

You got it?I asked Reed.

He nodded and turned his laptop towards me; everything Matias said matched the sketch.

Is that him?I asked Matias as Reed turned the screen towards him.

The eyes are rounder and the eyebrows thicker,Matias murmured with a frown.

Reed fixed the sketch on the computer, and Matias vigorously nodded. That’s him.”

I stared at the sketch, committing it to memory since Jack couldn’t get any CCTV footage from the country jail on Lucas Santiago.

The only question now is who the fuck is Lucas Santiago? He’s got the money to bribe the guards and get Matias out of prison. And why would he want to mess with Andi? Is he someone from the bar where Andi used to work? I need to ask her about Lucas Santiago without telling her I have her father in custody. She’d go crazy if she found out.

Find a match on the database,I instructed Reed.

Got it, boss. What about him?he tipped his head at Matias.

Take care of him,I told Reed and spun on my heels.

What?! Wait!Matias pulled on his zip ties again, scrambling to break free from the chair. We had a deal!

I did not pay him another glance and walked out of the cave. Jack was briskly walking to catch up with me. The waterfalls nuffled Matiasscreams, and outside the cave, Maple and Storm were already swimming in the water, River just sitting on he banks, tail wagging as he saw me.

Hey, bud,” I ruffled River’s hair. Maple and Storm barked as they swam across the water, rushing towards me. Why aren’t you playing in the water?

River whined, as though he wanted me to know that he’s been a good boy; that’s why he stayed where I told him to stay.

I chuckled and rubbed the back of his ears. Go. Play.I commanded River, and he barked, jumping into the water and ollowing Maple and Storm.

Jack stood beside me as I watched my dogs play in the water. I even picked up a stick from the ground and threw it across he waterfall.

Can I say something, boss?Jack asked, bouncing a little on his heels.

What?I peeked a glance at him, eyebrows curled.

He had a secret smile on his thin lips. You were excellent back there,he murmured. It’s like you haven’t stepped away from everythingat all.”

Jack had always been an idealist. He enjoyed working for the Maldinis, and he devoted his life to the family. He’s one of the people who urged me to stay and continue the legacy. I see that that hasn’t changed.

None of them knew that I had made a promise to someone, which is why I stayed away from the family business. I promised to use my hands for something good, not for bloodshed. And I wasn’t good at anything else besides the family business and baseball, so I chose the latter.

Chapter 125

Nah,I said, waiting for Maple to bring the stick back into the bank. Storm and River swim behind her. This isn’t the life I want, Jack. I managed to get out, and I won’t go back.

Jack had a hard time processing my decision, and I could hear his mind working on a speech to make me change my mind. But if you didn’t go back, you wouldn’t have that man bound on that chair, spilling everything he knew about Lucas Santiago.

His words knocked some sense into me, put a stop to my smile, and my throat went dry as I realized he had a point.

I didn’t just go back on my word. I dipped my feet back into the life I wanted to escape from, and I won’t be able to protect

Andi if I don’t.

I clenched my fists and gritted my teeth. Tell Reed to keep Matias alive.

Jack whipped his head toward me with a frown. I kept my gaze on my dogs as they enjoyed the sunny day and the cool

water.

Now, Jack,I grunted, pinning him with a sharp sideeye.

He spun on his heels so fast that the dirt on the ground created dust. I waited for Jack to get through the waterfall before ! pulled out my phone and dialled Cole’s number.

My cousin answered on the fifth ring; his voice was raspy and grainy. What?

I need your help,I murmured, swallowing my pride. He knew that I wouldn’t ask for his help if it wasn’t important. And all the help I asked of him was because of Andi.

I heard him groan, sheets rustled, and then he blew a sigh. Why, what happened?

I have Andi’s father in custody,I said, and she doesn’t know it. I don’t want to kill him.”

Cole chuckled. You mean you don’t want blood on your hands, so you called your cousin to clean your mess. Did I get everything correct?

I sighed and picked up the stick Maple brought to the bank, throwing it into the water again.

Are you going to help me or not?I fired back, sounding annoyed that he had everything figured out already.

Can I say no?sarcasm dripped from his voice like honey. Nana Lucy will kill me if she finds out I didn’t help his favorite grandchild.

Oh, don’t sound so bitter about it,I rolled my eyes. You were her favorite; she just doesn’t want to stroke your ego.

Ha, ha,” he let out a monotonous laugh. Send me the details. I’ll handle it.

I smirked. And Cole, don’t kill him, not yet, at least.

What?he groaned. Do you want me to buy him a penthouse while you decide if you want to kill him or not?

I shook my head. I need to tell Andi first, okay? And she gets to decide.

His laugh this time was gleeful. I can hear the grin on his face. You’re fucking whipped, man. Whipped!
