Chapter 130
-Beckett-
This wasn’t a typical kidnapping. Kidnappers usually ask for one thing: ransom. If it’s not just cash, it means whoever was behind this has an ulterior motive that goes deeper than the desire for money.
I had to excuse myself from Julie and Caleb. I conjured a hopefully believable lie that I needed to speak with the authorities and that it was better for them to stay home. Julie doesn’t buy my alibi, but she must’ve seen the urgency in my eyes, so she had no choice but to trust me.
Cole, Reed, and Dean arrived at the rental house in two cars. Cole’s SUV and Andi’s car.
Inside the house, I stared at the marriage contract they found in Andi’s car, baffled, bewildered, and every other synonym for confused. My name glared at me from the husband’s side of the contract, yet the wife’s part was empty. This paper w35 heavier than a ton of bricks, making my head hurt as I tried to understand what the fuck it meant, and making the situation even more disconcerting than it already was.
What the hell was this supposed to mean? Is this some kind of elaborate joke? Marriage? Who would be so desperate to marry me that they had to go through the lengths of kidnapping Andi? This was a serious crime. Haven’t they done a background check on me?
“You have to sign that, boss? That’s it?” Luna asked, peeking at the paper from over my shoulder. She was chewing a strawberry–flavored bubble gum, blowing it into a bubble, then letting it crack.
I was on the couch in the living room. Cole, Reed, and Dean were in the kitchen, munching on two boxes of pizza, while Jack was drinking his coffee from the single couch. All six of us were in deep thought, trying to figure out what this marriage
contract meant.
“That’s what the paper said.” I tipped my chin towards the folded paper atop the envelope. ‘Beckett Hale, sign this contract, the instruction was in neat handwriting, as though whoever wrote it didn’t even feel any worry, fear, or anxiety.
Luna hummed, her mind trying to process this change of events. I can’t even call this a development, because we can’t figure out what the kidnapper will do next.
“But her kidnapper was a guy, right?” Luna plopped into the empty space beside me, her curly hair bouncing as it framed her confused face.
“The one who took Andi,” Jack offered, taking a sip of his coffee. It must be an Asian thing. The temperature was humid, but he’s still drinking coffee. “It’s safe to assume that we are dealing with more than one person here.”
“It doesn’t say where you’ll be filing that or if you’ll meet your wife?” Luna pried, sounding like a little kid voicing everything that came to her mind. She scooted to the edge of the couch, sitting with crossed legs as she waited for my answer.
“I’m not interested, and I’m not signing anything,” I grumbled, tossing the paper back onto the table. I glared at the contract as it dropped silently on the envelope, wishing I could burn right through the guy who kidnapped Andi
“But what about Andi-” Luna was cooking up her next question when my phone vibrated in my pocket.
It was the same unknown number that sent me the photo of Andi’s car.
Reed abandoned his food and went to his open laptop, tapping my phone into his tracing program. He nodded at me signaling that I could now answer the call.
“Where is Andi?” I fired first before the kidnapper could speak. I needed to buy time, and in order to do that, I had to set the
tone of this conversation.
