Lila seemed unaware of the sudden change in my mood. She bounced on her heels as she accepted the scoops of gelato from the cashier. She handed me the vanilla–flavored one, and I trailed behind her to our table on autopilot.
I threw another glance at the pillar where I had seen Carter leaning. He was nowhere to be seen, and I have t admit, this feels like some kind of mind game my own head was playing on me.
What would Carter be doing here, right? His team is obviously not playing against this City’s baseball team. Not that I was keeping tabs on his games anymore, but it doesn’t make sense for Carter to be here.
I blew out a breath and glared at my pearl–white dessert. I cannot let the ghost of Carter ruin my day, so I lift my gaze at Lila and put on the best poker face I could muster.
“I think we should go back to the Chanel store,” Lila said with a pout, stabbing her Pistachio with Hazelnut gelato with a spoon.
‘Focus, Andi,’ I thought. ‘Lila. Chanel. Keep your head in the conversation.‘
“Do you really need another bag?” I voiced what was really in my head the entire time we were in that store. I picked up that Lila already has every bag in that store in all colors and sizes. She was a luxury brand addict, the bags of Gucci and Louis Vuitton resting on the vacant chair on our table told me so.
She looked thoughtful for a moment, her shoulders sagging. “But that purse is gonna haunt me in my sleep.”
I wanted to laugh at her tone, I really do, but I controlled myself. I would never understand her dilemma. She grew up rich, while I was poor. Maybe that Chanel bag was like steak for me, something that haunted me in my sleep.
now, as long as it’s your money and you are not hurting anyone, I think you should buy it,” I said, “Just
I don’t know where that came from, but from how Lila paused and blinked at me, what I said was messed up.
“That’s totally different from me buying a Chanel bag, Andi,” she frowned at me.
It definitely was, in her point of view, but for me, that was true. Beckett and I lived in a different world, and I know that the chances of me getting hurt are huge, yet here I am, risking my heart all over again.
“It kinda is,” I shrugged my shoulders, “so I think you should buy that bag.”
Lila reached over the table and held my hand. “Do you really think of my brother like that?” Her voice dropped in volume, somewhere between worried and confused. “Like he’s someone you can’t afford?”
Throughout the day, this was probably the first time I was 100% honest in our conversation. “He’s out of my league, Lila. Why do you think I kept walking away from him when I was falling for him?”
Chapter 171
Saying those words out loud was like being relieved of the truckload of worry that was weighing down my shoulders,
Lila paused, her blue–gray eyes growing wide. “I knew it,” she gasped. “I knew there was something going on
there
That’s not really what I need to hear right now, I want Lila to tell me I must be losing my head for being in a relationship with her brother, but that’s far from what came out of her mouth.
“Beckett is just some guy who wanted to find someone real, Andi,” she revealed. “So don’t ever think you can’t afford my brother, because it’s the other way around. He cannot afford someone like you. He needs to work hard to earn your trust.”
Lila really means those words. I see it in the determination in her eyes, in her tight and warm grip in my hands, and the calmness that was surrounding her.
“1-
She shook her head. “No, Andi. Every time you see my brother like that, I want you to look beyond the baseball star he is. He’s just another human being”
I heard what she was saying, but the figure that walked behind Lila grabbed my full attention. This time, he wasn’t lurking in the distant pillar, but he was already walking behind my date for today.
Carter.
He walked slowly, just enough for me to recognize him and see the rage in his eyes. Then he stepped back, disappearing into the crowd again. I jumped in my seat when my phone vibrated in the pocket of my shorts.
It was a call from an unregistered number. I hesitated in answering it, but when I looked up, I saw Carter glaring at me in the distance, a phone held to his ear.
I swallowed hard as I answered the call and held the phone to my ear. Lila took that moment to eat her gelato. Mine had already melted in the cup, looking bland and unappetizing.
“Hello?” I murmured, my voice clipped.
–
“Tell your friend about this call, and I will have my friend snap that pretty little neck,” he said without preamble, his menacing tone filling my head. I spotted him then a man in a black shirt had materialized at Carter’s side, muscles straining the fabric. He caught my eye and bared yellowing teeth, cracking his knuckles slowly.
“Hey, everything alright?” I answered, making sure that Lila won’t be suspicious about this call.
“Good,” Carter hummed. “Now I want you to excuse yourself and walk to where I am.”
I lowered my phone. “I need to go to the ladies‘ room.”
Lila frowned. “Again?”
We had just gone there before coming to this gelato booth. I stared at her, my smile faltering. “Yeah, I think
