Chapter 174

-Andi-

I lay awake in my bed, sheets drawn into my chest as I waited for Beckett in silence.

In the dim room, Carter’s face was vivid in my mind. Everything that happened in the basement parking lot replayed itself, like a bad movie on repeat.

My hands were still clammy, my heart thumping like elephant footsteps as I remembered Carter’s anger, annoyance, and his condemning tone.

He was behind everything that happened to me? My father, Miguel, and Sloane? Why would he waste his time, money, and effort on me? He dumped me. He didn’t want me. He made me sign that NDA, and now he still wants to ruin me? What have I ever done to deserve this? All I did was fall in love with him.

All these questions circled relentlessly in my mind. I wanted to believe that part of our relationship had been real. The endearment he called me, the inside jokes, the gentle way he’d tucked a stray strand of hair behind my ear, I mean, those things meant something. But now, after everything that happened, they felt like evidence of my own foolishness, not proof of his love for me.

A flurry of emotions keeps circling my chest. Guilt, relief, pain, hatred.

I didn’t ask what those police officers would do to Carter. Lila and I spent the drive back to the hotel in silence. I don’t ask her how she learned about Carter’s schemes. I didn’t have the strength to hear another blow in my already ruined life.

Carter was gone, that’s all that matters. I tried to convince myself of this, but to no avail. I was only fooling myself.

I grunted audibly, pulling the sheet over my head as I curled underneath. I pressed my lips together, holding in my tears. That man doesn’t deserve any of my tears again.

I hear the muffled ding of the elevator. My heart leaped, both in panic and relief. I waited for a little while longer before the door to the room opened, revealing Beckett’s silhouette. He closed the door softly behind him, standing before the door for a beat before he started to walk towards the bed.

He hovered over me, hesitating, then crawled into the bed beside me.

He hasn’t touched me yet. He was trying to figure out if I was already asleep. There was a respectful distance between us; Beckett always knew when to give me space, and now he’s just counting the seconds as they tick by.

He didn’t pull me into his arms. He just waited, patient, until my breath slowed and the tremor in my chest faded. When I finally sighed and pushed the blanket down my face, the low light of the bedside table lit up Beckett’s worried face.

Hey.

Hi,” I whispered. You’re here.

He smiled down at me. Yes. I just got back.”

Are you hungry?I asked in my senile attempt to start a conversation.

Beckett shook his head. I’m still full,he grumbled, and we both knew that was a lie when his stomach grumbled.

Uhmwhere have you been?I shifted topics.

He paused. Home,he said simply. I spoke with Miguel.”

1 blinked at him, surprised by everything he revealed and the fact that he wasn’t sugarcoating things from me anymore.

He turned to his side. The bed wobbled as he faced me. Then he reached for my hand, clutching my trembling one in his warm palms. Lila told me what happened. I’m sorry I wasn’t there to protect you.

I swallowed around the lump in my throat. Marko was there because of you.”

Marko was the stranger who saved me and held a gun to Carter’s face. Beckett might not have been there physically, but it was still because of him that I was safe.

Still. I should have been the one to protect you,he murmured, his face pruning as though he’d been stabbed with guilt. and it was twisting in his guts.

We can’t be together 24/7, Beckett,I hushed. Don’t be so hard on yourself.

You don’t know…he trailed off as he pinched his eyes shut, blinking away the unwanted thoughts that had crossed his mind. I thought I was gonna lose you again, Andi.”
