Chapter 173
-Andi-
“P… protect me?” I stuttered as the adrenaline in my system started to wear out.

My hands trembled. I hid them behind my back, fingers clutching together as I watched Carter and the stranger lock eyes. Slowly, Carter regained his footing and rested his back against the car, while the stranger remained calm and composed, the pistol in his hands catching the basement overhead lights.
“Na–ah,” the stranger shook his head.
I noticed it then, Carter’s hand was hovering over his side.
“Hands where I can see them,” the stranger tipped his gun on the side, motioning for Carter to raise his hand.
Did Carter really have a gun? The severity of this situation was becoming increasingly real. He came here to hurt me, and that was becoming loud and clear, and I stupidly followed his command. If this stranger hadn’t come to my rescue, this might have quickly escalated to another kidnapping.
Carter pursed his chapped lip and raised his hand up to his chest, but his eyes told me he was far from surrendering. “Do you even have the authority to do this?” he spat.
The stranger huffed. “Do you have the authority to kidnap her?”
Carter glowered at the stranger, and we heard the elevator ding. The stranger remained watching Carter while I looked over my shoulder to see who had just stepped out of the elevator.
Lila’s eyes swept the basement until they landed on me. She was standing in front of two police officers, and the stranger didn’t even drop his gun. In fact, his posture became more aggressive, like a cobra that was ready to strike.
“Andi!” Lila gasped, rushing towards me in her flats. She threw her arms around me, and her familiar presence provided a much–needed comfort in my weary mind.
“Are you okay?” She clutched my shoulder and held me at arm’s length, her blue–gray eyes sweeping over my face.
I nodded, swallowing the lump in my throat. She got the message, I thought, as tears prickle the back of my eyelids. My eyesight misted, and I felt a hand clutching my throat. “I… I’m okay.”
Lila gave me another searching look before sliding her gaze to the man learing by the car. “You!” she spat, her voice suddenly stiff, firm, and commanding. I had never heard her speak like that before. She had always been talkative, jolly, and full of energy. Now, she slipped into another personality, closing the distance between her and Carter, staring at him as if his size didn’t matter.
“You messed with the wrong girl, boy,” Lila grumbled.
Carter looked down at her, bewildered, as if he was wondering where Lila was getting all her fiestiness.
“Two nights in jail, maybe that will knock some sense into your head,” Lila announced.
The stranger dropped his gun to his side, watching as Lila confronted Carter. He stepped back, letting the two officers move in behind her.
“You’re arresting me?” Carter frowned at the police in uniform. “On what grounds? She’s the one who breached our agreement,” he pointed at me. “I am here to remind her of what she signed.”

Chapter 173
I stood there, fuming as Carter laid out his version of the story.
“Andi didn’t do shit, dumbass,” Lila said. “She didn’t have to. Even a blind man could see that you mistreated her, especially my brother
Carter glowered at Lila. “Who are you to tell these officers what to do?
Lila huffed, upping her chin. There was no hint of fear in her eyes. All that glowed in her blue–grey pools was determination and antwryance. “That’s for you to find out, rookie, if you ever get out of jail”
Carter clenched his fist. “You can’t do this”
“I can, and I will,” Lila smirked. “My brother is on to you, and just so you know, we already have Miguel in custody. He will sing like a mockingbird in no time”
That made Carter clench his jaw. He was breathing, fire through his nose, and he glared at Lila. “You can’t do this to me. I will sue you! And you two, he turned to the officers standing behind Lila. “I will have you removed from the service!”
One of the officers buffed. “I’d like to hear how you would do that,” he said. “We have everything you did to Miss Wilson on camera. You just ruined your life, boy”
The second police officer skirted past Lila and grabbed Carter’s shoulder. He slammed him against the car door, frisking his lower body until he plucked the gun stashed in Carter’s waistband. “Do you have the license for this?”
Carter couldn’t answer because the officer slammed him against the car again. Carter winced as the officer kept frisking him for his wallet and the keys to his car.
I haven’t been arrested before, but I know they should read Carter his Miranda rights, and they don’t have the authority to take his belongings here. Something about the way they moved made me uneasy. Shouldn’t they have read Carter his rights? I wondered if they were really police at all. The officer kept tossing everything to his partner, who, in turn, shoved everything Carter owned into his pocket.
