Chapter 186

Each time I’d close my eyes, the ghost of the girl in black haunts me. I tried to move forward from what I saw on the streets of Santa Monica. Honestly, Beckett and that girl had done nothing incriminating. This ghost that haunts me was only in my head, and my gut feels.
Our honeymoon ended, and Beckett had a game he needed to prepare for. They were preparing for game seven of the division series, and his vacation was long overdue. I was even surprised that the team management allowed him almost a week off when they were this close to winning the series.
True to his words, Beckett didn’t ask me again about our home arrangement for now. He even drove me back home without question.
For the first time since I got kidnapped and married, I lay in my own bed, feeling a sense of silence that had me weaving through the choices that I had made.
I am Mrs. Beckett Hale now. I don’t know how much convincing my mind needs to fully process everything. But there’s also the question of whether I should change my name now. Or should I wait a month, like how we were waiting things out before Beckett announced our marriage?
For now, only our family, his manager, Jace, and Siobhan know about us. That was as intimate as it could get.
‘Oh, what to do, Andi?‘ This question rocked me to a peaceful sleep.
In the morning, I woke up with a newfound strength to return to my normal life. I got a good morning message from Beckett to start my day. Then, when I walked out to the kitchen, Mom and Caleb were already there, waiting for me.
“Good morning,” I greeted them as I went towards the coffee maker and poured myself a cup.
“Good morning, honey,” Mom chimed as she settled down on her chair.
I turned around and watched my mom and brother do the most domestic thing I had witnessed in the last week. Mom picked up the plate of bacon and placed four strips into Caleb’s plate. For someone as big as Caleb, I could really call him a big baby because he’ll always be Mom’s baby boy.
“Andi? When did you get back? Where’s Beckett?” Caleb fired, munching down on his food like he hadn’t eaten anything yesterday.
Caleb’s shoulders were stiffer, bulkier. Has he gained a few more pounds since the wedding? How is that possible?
I settled down in my seat, and just like what she did to Caleb, Mom filled my plate with food. “Last night, and he’s training for the game,” I answered Caleb’s question.
“Ahh,”
my brother hummed through a mouth full of food. “Nwaw thwat youwre mwaried to Beckett, dwoes this mwean I get fwree ticketss twoo whis gwame?” Even if I barely understood his question, Mom berated
him.

“Caleb!” Mom gasped. “Don’t ever ask Beckett about that. He might be your brother–in–law now, but we don‘ take advantage of his kindness like that.”
I hummed a yes to second mom’s notion. “If you want to see him play, I can buy you a ticket. Players don’t g free tickets, just so you know.”
Caleb pouted. He had to swallow his food first before he spoke. “But he promised to give me tickets.”
I shook my head. “If he gives you the ticket, then it’s fine. But don’t ask him about that again, okay?”
“Fine,” he grumbled and focused on his food. Caleb is really still a boy.
“How was your trip?” Mom asked to change the topic. “How is California?”
That sparkle in Mom’s eyes pinched something in my chest. Just like me, Hawthorne Bay was the only place Mom had known forever. As I watched excitement flourish in her face as she waited for me to answer her question, I made a promise to myself that I would take Mom on a vacation far away from this place.
I still don’t know how I will do that, but that’s gonna be one of my goals now.
“California was beautiful, Mom,” I gushed. Caleb pulled back his pout and listened as I spoke about the places we visited. I showed them pictures and described the food I had tasted in every restaurant where Beckett had taken me.
“Ohh,” Caleb said wistfully. “I want to travel one day.”
We had just finished breakfast, and Caleb was in the sink washing the dishes while Mom and I finished our coffee.
“You gotta study hard, Caleb,” Mom reminded him. “You can dream, but you have to work for it.”
“Nah. I can see the world by playing baseball, Mom. That doesn’t need studying,” he insisted.
Mom gasped. “You silly boy. If you don’t study hard, how will you get into the university and get drafted?”
My brother looked up at the ceiling for a moment, deep in thought. “Maybe Beckett can take me under his wing,” he said with a grin.
Mom and I looked at each other, shaking our heads. We both know that that cheeky grin was a telltale that he’s joking. Caleb has a good head on his shoulder, and I have to trust that my brother understands that Beckett is not our ticket out of poverty.
“What time is your shift, Mom?” I asked Mom.
Mom’s answer was cut off by the ringing of the doorbell. She frowned at me. This was odd. We don’t get any visitors here except for Beckett and Siobhan, and those two wouldn’t come here this early.
“Who could that be?” Mom murmured as the doorbell rang again.
“I’ll get it,” I said, jumping to my feet and heading for the door. A man in a black suit and tie stood on the porch, his hair cut short and his face freshly shaved. A dark tattoo–letters I couldn’t quite make out–peeked
