“Uhm…” I slid my gaze back onto the guy in the sharp suit, my smile faltering, “Can I just say goodbye to my Mom?”
The man’s eyes flicked from me to look inside the horse, nodding curtly.
“Okay,” I breathed out as I closed the door. I took a deep breath and calmed myself before going to the kitchen and telling Mom I had to get going.
I took my time grabbing my things. My legs trembled as I finally stepped out of the house. The man in a suit was still waiting patiently, the SUV window now shut.
[ felt like I was being kidnapped again as I followed the guy in suit towards the second SUV. My car was just in front of the house, I could just say no to this and drive towards the office.
God. I hope I don’t miss another day in the office. I have been out for almost two weeks now!’
My feet were heavy as a boulder as we finally stood before the SUV. Guy in suit opened the door for me, and Nana Lucy had already scooted to the other side of the backseat.
‘Good morning, Ma’am,” I said.
Is she mad at me or something? She nodded without looking at me as if that was the best way she could acknowledge my
presence.
She was different from the night of her birthday. She was warm and welcoming back then. I mean, she even invited me over o her party. But why does it feel like she was held at gunpoint to meet me here?
I settled in my seat as Guy in a suit closed the door. Then he slid into the passenger side, and choking silence hovered over ne. We exited the neighborhood and entered the freeway. The more miles the car covered, the harder I clenched my fist above my lap. I prepared myself to open this door and roll onto the sidewalk if Nana Lucy spent another minute of this excruciating silence.
Nana Lucy pressed a button on the side of her door, and a partition rolled between the backseat and the front seat, perfectly :losing us in our claustrophobic bubble.
‘Come here, Andrea,” were Nana Lucy’s first words as soon as we were separated from the front seat.
I thought my mind was only playing tricks on me, so I had to stare at Nana Lucy, make sure she was really talking to me.
This ume, her gray eyes were soft, and she smiled at me as she opened her arms. “Come and give your Nana a hug
“Oh.. “I hesitated for a beat, then scooted closer to her. She wrapped her frail arms around me in a warm embrace, her expensive vanilla perfume enveloping me.
I released the breath I had been holding since we left the house, sank into her embrace, and allowed my heart to relish this moment She wasn’t mad at me, but something was up with her.
I pulled away from her when her arms loosened. That’s when she grabbed my hand and squeezed it “I didn’t think Beckett would be this reckless and marry you so soon”
I blinked at her mouth parting She was showing me a whirlwind of emotions, really One moment, she was aloot and dismissive; the next, she was sweet and clingy, now she’s berating me and spitting out words that honestly made my palms sweat I hope she doesn’t notice it, though

“Reckless?” I blinked at her.

She hummed and looked out the window. “That stupid boy,” she grumbled as though she could see her grandson in the blurring fields on the side of the road. “He caught us all off guard.”
She wasn’t asking me anything, but I felt the need to defend my husband. “We both wanted this, Ma’am.”
She shook her head. “What did I tell you?” she turned to me with a soft smile. This woman is really weird. “Call me Nana Lucy.”
I nodded. “Nana Lucy, we both wanted this,” I repeated, so she wouldn’t put all the blame on my husband.
“I know, dear,” she squeezed my hand, “but you married him without knowing what you’re walking into.”
I frowned. She couldn’t see it because she turned back to her window.
Today, she was wearing a pure white dress. It was spotless and sharp, and her gray hair was tied in a neat bun. She’s got a bag sitting beside. It was pure white as well.
Before I could even ask her to explain what she meant by that, she dropped another question. “What did he tell you about our family?”
“You’re family,” I echoed, searching my mind for the right way to answer the question. “He told me about the kingpin of the south, Arturo Maldini.”
She turned to me, stunned. “What did he tell you about that bastard?”
I blinked at her. She’s wearing that really sour face at the murmur of her husband’s name. “Not much. He just said that he wants to keep our marriage on a low profile.”
“Sneaky boy,” she scoffed. “Do you know who that is?”
I couldn’t answer her with a straight yes or a no, so I just answered her truthfully. “I heard stories about him when I was still working at the bar.”
“Stories. I’m pretty sure he planted those stories himself to make him look powerful,” she murmured, more to herself than to me. A faraway look crossed Nana Lucy’s face as she gazed ahead, as if recalling a memory.
It sounded like she is not on good terms with her husband, but there’s still a pinch of fondness in her eyes as she remembers something in the past.
“We’re here,” she said. And I looked up to see that we arrived at Montgomery Agency.
She drove me to work? I thought. I gripped my messenger bag tightly, ready to open the door when the Guy in suit opened it for me.
“Thank you for driving me here, Nana Lucy,” I said, sliding out of the SUV.
She hummed as the guy closed the door, rounding to open Nana Lucy’s door. He helped her out of the car, and I was confused when she offered me her hand. I reached for it, gripping her hand tightly.
