Gasps filled the air, then hushed murmurs. I could only stare at my boss, jaw sweeping the floor as he glared at me.

I pinned him with a questioning gaze. What the hell are you doing?

His gaze darkened, as if he understood me. I could practically hear him grumble from his seat. Nana Lucy was smirking beside him, as though she were watching an opera with premium wine in hand.

That smile told me she was the mastermind of this scheme. What are you up to, Nana Lucy?

Four hundred, for number two,” Vivian called, her voice slicing through the courtyard.

My pulse skyrocketed. The bright lights swallowed the crowd, turning everyone into silhouettes. Everyone except my bos

His expression was as clear as day. He was carved out of shadow and fury, jaw locked tight, eyes fixed on me with a stare the felt like it could bruise. He was madat whom or what? I wasn’t sure.

I swallowed hard, hands clenching the fabric of my dress. It was all I could do not to cower away from the backstage. After his bid, I could now feel people’s eyes on me. They weren’t just looking at methey saw me, now that Beckett’s interest wa

on me.

Why did you bid for me? You didn’t bid for Sloane, dammit! This would be another reason for that woman to plan my death a thousand ways. I’m not bothered by her, but it would be nice not to have someone dreaming of killing me.

Then Cole’s voice rose again. Four fifty!

Gasps scattered across the audience.

I still couldn’t see him because of the lights, but I felt his confidence, his composure. He was the complete opposite of the man sitting up front, who looked like he was ready to strangle someone.

Beckett’s hand twitched. His nostrils flared.

Five hundred,Beckett’s voice was unwavering.

I heard the MC gasp loudly behind me. I slid a gaze at him. He was watching me intently, judging me from head to foot. I couldn’t blame him. I bet this Audrey was as stunning as Sloane, and in his eyes, I was a mere replacement. That was what I was a replacement.

Five hundred?I heard a voice in the audience. Beckett? Who is that chick?one shouted. Must be someone special we don’t know about, another suggested.

I could practically hear Sloane cursing me in her mind from backstage, strangling me with her long red talons.

Five hundred ten,” a new voice said.

Who the hell is that? It’s some guy at the corner table, his smirk was irking, the kind that hoodlums in movies do. He licked his lips as his gaze slid down my body. I suddenly want to cover myself. Its like he’s already stripping me bare with his eyes.

My stomach lurched as I shivered. What was wrong with these people? They were willing to spend half a million dollars for a date with some chick who could cook? These people were out of their minds.

Fivefifty.” Cole didn’t even hesitate.

Vivian pressed a hand to her chest dramatically. Fivefivezero! Do I-

Six hundred. My gaze snapped back to Beckett as the entire courtyard went quiet. Everyone was silent, except Nana Luc who let out an excited oohhh. She even clapped her hands like a kid watching her favorite TV show, live.

Yup. She’s definitely the one who planned all of this

Beckett’s number was raised casually, but his expression was anything but casual. His jaw was ticking, his eyes were sharp. never leaving me for even a second. He looked like a man pushed to the edge, daring anyone to shove him any harder.

Vivian didn’t even sound surprised as she called on Beckett’s bid. Six hundred thousand! Going once, going twice-

My breath caught.

Going twice-

My heart tripped painfully as I sent a plea to the heavens to save me. I looked at Cole’s way, waiting for him to place anot bid, only to have my heart sink to the ground.

Sold!

Vivian slammed the gavel. A sound that cracked straight through my ribs.

Beckett Hale. My freaking boss had just bought me from an auction for six hundred grand.

Six. Hundred. Thousand. Dollars.

My legs wobbled as Vivian gently nudged me down the stairs. I had no clue what I was supposed to feel.

Should I be grateful that he bid for me until he won: Or offended that he bought me with his money?

Was this still for charity for him? Or was this his way of telling me he owned memy timeand no one could take away hi money’s worth? He had his claim on me now, and everyone in this event knew it.

My stomach twisted painfully. Each step back to our table felt like a walk of shame. Everyone was watching me now

When I reached our table, Lila and Siobhan were gushing about what happened on that stage and how many people wanted to date me. There were no sparks in my eyes as I smiled at them. I would never understand what kind of silly games rich people play.

I gave them a practiced smile I use with the customers at the bar. Then I leaned toward Cole. If Beckett wanted a reaction, he wasn’t getting one. Not yet.

You don’t like losing, huh?I hissed in a whisper, I didn’t mean to dump my anger on Cole, but I was countingdesperately -on him to save me from that stage, not Beckett.

Cole winced, tilting his head apologetically. I said that, but there’s a catch

Catch?I raised an eyebrow at him.

I don’t like losing, except if it’s to Beckett.”

Huh. You gave up. That’s all there is to it.

I didn’t give up,he corrected, lowering his voice. I conceded.

Conceded?I repeated, baffled. That’s the same thing.

He smirked, as if the matter were simple. I’m older, and Beckett’s a sore loser. I’m supposed to give way. If I win again him, he becomes a curse on earth until he gets his way. You don’t want that.”

I blinked, turning to Lila.

That’s true, babe, she murmured. He’s the sorest. Beckett hates losing to Cole.

I didn’t know whether to laugh or scream.

Before I could respond, the lights dimmed again, and the MC announced the end of the auction. Everyone shifted ther attention as Nana Lucy was escorted to the massive birthday cake in the middle of the stage.

Beckett stood beside her, a dark cloud in a tux. His gaze was focused on our table, on me. I can feel him marking hus territory in front of the guests.

I tried not to look, but that was a feat hard to endure. I couldn’t stay around him any longer, or I might lose my mind. The emotions he was making me feel were no longer normal. One moment, he made my skin crawl in elation, then the next be made me want to throttle him.

The moment the first slice of cake hit the plate, I whispered to Siobhan, Siobhan, please help me. I want to get out of here.

She blinked, immediately sensing the tremble in my voice. Of course. Are you okay?

No,I said, exhaling shakily. Definitely not.”

Lila squeezed my hand under the table. I’ll cover for you if Nana asks.

Relief hit me so hard I almost sagged. Then I turned to Cole. Nana Lucy gave him the assignment of watching me. He shrugged. That’s the cake. My job’s done.
