Chapter 24 The Promise of Protection

Nichole pulled Jimmy tight against her, her eyes blazing red. “Margaret, if you dare hurt my son, I’ll make you pay!”

She was trembling with anger, her face contorted.

But her words didn’t seem to affect Margaret at all.

Margaret looked down at her, a frosty smile touching her red lips. “Then you let him come bother me again and just see what happens.”

Her words were plain and calm.

It didn’t feel like she was joking, nor threatening-she sounded like she was simply stating a fact.

“Jimmy is only seven! He’s just a child! What could he possibly do to you?”

Nichole chickened out. This Margaret was seriously weird. One icy look from Margaret sent a shiver of pure fear down her spine.

Margaret’s tone grew even colder. “Being a child isn’t an excuse for being cruel.”

“You… You’re out of your mind…” Nichole’s voice faded to a whisper. “Let’s go, baby. Let’s get out of here.”

Clutching her son, Nichole hurried away.

Margaret watched them go, her eyes full of contempt.

That boy Jimmy had it too easy. His parents spoiled him rotten. It made him arrogant and mean.

If he’d had to live like she did in that organization as a kid, he’d have died in a minute!

Since she could remember, she had already been in the organization-and she had only been four years old at that time.

There were ten thousand children her age-orphans the organization had gathered from everywhere, using

any means necessary.

They were trained to become cold-blooded killers.

Margaret killed her first person when she was five years old.

That was the first killer training lesson: guts training!

They tied living people to posts and gave each child a knife. Then they told a group of little kids to step forward and kill those people.

Five-year-old Margaret froze. The instructor grabbed her hand-her small fingers clenched around the knife-and forced her to stab.

The blade went in clean and came out red.

Blood splashed across her face.

For a long time after that, Margaret had nightmares every single night. The dead, covered in blood, came

But then the bodies piled up. Fear turned into tolerance. Tolerance turned into numbness.

Now, killing was nothing out of the ordinary for her. It didn’t stir any feeling inside her anymore.

The training was brutal. Out of ten thousand children, only 30 survived. Each one was an elite. A top-tier killer.

Later, Margaret and those 30 companions founded a killer organization-and soon enough, it became the top-ranked organization in the underworld.

They called it the Hall of Reaper.

She was Reaper. The owner of the organization. The top of assassins.

She pulled her thoughts back to the present.

“Margaret, where to now?” Edward stood in front of her tall and solid, like he could block any storm.

“Home. I need to sleep,” Margaret said.

Her big brother was good-looking, with a strong presence. She’d heard plenty in her past life about how ruthless he could be, and she’d always thought fairly well of him.

She still didn’t understand why he had suddenly taken her side today.

She didn’t feel like guessing. “You used to hate me. Why are you helping me now?”

Edward’s eyes flickered. Her casual question felt like a sharp knife, cutting straight into his heart. It left him raw and bleeding.

He had been reborn-he’d come back to yesterday.

And now, here was his sister, standing bright and stunning.

She had their mother’s best features.

Her legs weren’t broken. Her eyes could still see. She still hadn’t lost her voice.

Last time, it was his fault. He had been fooled. After she came home, he saw her only a handful of times. He had basically ignored his own sister, leaving her to survive alone.

When he saw her again, she’d become a total wreck. She had been taken by traffickers. They had shattered her legs and left her deaf, blind, and mute.

But this time, she was whole. This time, he wouldn’t let nyone touch her.

Edward was quiet for a long moment. When he finally spoke, his voice was rough, like a wounded animal choking on guilt. “I’m trying to atone for what I did. From now on, you can do whatever you want in Capaville. Own it. No matter if you kill someone or bur places down, I’ll take the blame for you.”
