The moment I stepped into Orion’s office, I stopped walking so suddenly that Orion nearly walked into my back. I had expected an office, obviously, but not this When somebody said the word office, I pictured a cramped room with a desk, chair, maybe a few filing cabinets, and some boxing certificates hanging on the wall.

What I definitely had not pictured was a space that looked bigger than some apartments. The office was enormous, with large windows overlooking part of the sports complex and sunlight spilling across floors and expensivelooking furniture There were shelves lined with binders and books, a conference table that looked like it belonged in a boardroom, a sitting area with several sofas, and a desk so large it could have comfortably seated three people.

For a few seconds, I genuinely wondered if Orion had accidentally brought me into somebody else’s office. The more I looked around, the more confused I became. Why in the world would a football player his age have a place like this? He wasn’t even the captain of the football team. He was a student and an athlete füst like me. The whole thing made absolute

no sense.

Behind me, I heard the door click shut. Orion didn’t seem to notice my confusion as he casually walked further into the room. Meanwhile, I found myself drawn toward the large desk, still trying to make sense of what I was seeing. Then my e landed on the nameplate sitting neatly at the center of the desk.

At first, I only noticed his name. Orion Dusk. That part wasn’t surprising, but what nearly gave me a heart attack was the ti written under it. Deputy Athletic Director.

I froze. Then I leaned closer because surely I had read it wrong. Maybe my eyes were tired. Maybe I had suffered a concussion when I fell earlier. Unfortunately, the words remained exactly the same no matter how many times I read ther

Deputy Athletic Director.

My mouth actually fell open. Behind me, I heard movement and turned around just in time to see Orion taking a seat on one of the sofas. He looked completely relaxed, like nothing about this situation was strange. Then he gestured toward the

ofa opposite him.

You can sit down,” Orion said calmly.

I continued staring at him, then I looked at the desk, then back at him, then back at the desk, then back at him aga

Absolutely not, I said.

Orion blinked What?

I pointed dramatically toward the nameplate What is that?

His eyes followed my finger before understanding finally crossed his face Anervous chuckle escaped hat insectharely which only made me even more suspicious. The fact that he was laughing meant he knew exactly how ichis use that looārd from my perspective Folded my arms tightly across my chest and narrowed my eyes of hom

How in the world are you the deputy athletic ductor? I demanded Shouldn’t some oht man of sogn be sitting in this officer You know somebody who complams about the back hug every doming Soonchonly who has gi modehdiben Somebody who looks like they’ve been working here to forty years Why are you utting here? that winchow rpade less sense than before.

The position was handed over to youI repeated slowly. What does that even mean? Who wakes up one morning and hands something like this to student?

Orion sighed and gestured toward the sofa again. How about we talk about what’s bothering you first? Then afterward you can ask me whatever questions you want

I immediately shook my head. No.

His eyebrows rose. No?

No. Absolutely not. There is no way we’re discussing my problems until you explain this first.

For a second he looked like he was debating whether to argue. Then he simply sighed in defeat. I could tell he had realized wasn’t going to let this go. Honestly, at that moment I had completely forgotten why I came there in the first place. My inability to control my speed had temporarily vanished from my mind, and was far more interested in understanding wh a twentysomething football player apparently had enough authority to own an office three times bigger than Coach

Ramirez’s.

Instead of sitting down immediately, another thought suddenly struck me. My eyes narrowed even further as I looked at him. How old are you?

The question clearly caught him off guard. What?

How old are you?I repeated.

Orion stared at me for a second before answering. Twentyone.

The answer only made me more suspicious. You’re lying.”

Now he looked genuinely confused. I’m not.

Yes, you are.

Why would I lie about my age?He asked.

pointed at the office again. This.”

Orion looked around. The office?

Yes, the office. You’re telling me you’re twentyone years old, and somehow you’re also the deputy athletic director questioned.

For the first time since meeting him and his friends. I found myself wondering it maybe I had been making assumptious this entire time. The boys were werewolves, so who was to say they aged normally Maybe Orion was secretly eighty years old. Maybe he was older than my grandparents, whom I never even met Maybe all of their were

The thought sounded ridu uleus, but then again, a month ago I would have said werewolves sounded ridiculous too. At this pomt, nothing felt impossible anymore

Did you think I was older? Onion asked with amusement

I don’t know what I thought I admitted But I debnitely didn’t think you were twenty one and somehow running part of the university

He laughed softly before shaking his head Tuna, I’m twenty one

Hey out a long nigh. If you’re really twentyone, then how does somebody your age end up with a position like this?

That seemed to be the question he had been waiting for. He gestured toward the sofa one last time. Sit down and I’ll

explain

This time I obeyed immediately. My curiosity had officially won.

The moment I sat down, I pointed at him. Star talking.”

Orion leaned back against the sofa and looked thoughtful for a moment before beginning. First, you need to understand something about Blackridge.

I nodded. Okay.

Blackridge University wasn’t originally created for humans,he started.

For a second I thought I had misheard him. What?

It wasn’t.”

I stared, and Orion continued calmly, completely unaware that he had just dropped what felt like a bombshell into my lap.

The university was originally established for our kind. Werewolves. Humans didn’t attend here back then. Over time more humans started applying, and eventually the school expanded enough that it had to accommodate them. New departments were added, new programs were introduced, and the university gradually became what it is today.

I sat there silently for several seconds. The information was so unexpected that my brain needed a moment to process it. So you’re telling me this entire university started out as a werewolf school?

Basically.

That’s insane.

Orion shrugged. I suppose it is.

I rubbed my forehead. Suddenly, a lot of things about this place felt slightly different. Fine,I said. Interesting history lesson, but what does that have to do with you being deputy athletic director?

Orion let out another sigh. Among the five founders of Blackridge, my grandfather was one of them.

I blinked. What?

My grandfather.”

I stared, then I stared harder, then I laughed because surely he was joking.

Unfortunately, Orion wasn’t laughing.

Oh my God,I muttered. You re serious.

He nodded. My grandfather’s name is Asher Dusk. He was responsible for the athletic division when the university was first

established.

For a few seconds, I genuinely didn’t know what to say. The conversation somehow kept becoming more ridiculous. “So your grandfather founded the university? One of the most soughtafter universities for athletes?

One of the founders,he corrected.

And he was in charge of sports?Lasked again to be sure.

Yes.

And because of that, you got handed an office?I asked.

Orion shrugged. Well, that’s a very simplified version.

threw my hands into the air. What other version is there?
