I was dressed in a pair of gray sweatpants and an oversized black hoodie as I stood in front of the mirror, staring at my reflection while trying to convince myself that I was making the right decision. The clock of my phone told me it was getting closer and closer to nine, which meant that if I planned on meeting Orion at the football field. I needed to leave

The logical part of my brain kept reminding me that there was absolutely nothing strange about what I was doing. I wasn’t sneaking out to meet a boy for a romantic midnight adventure. I wasn’t going on a date, and logically, I wasn’t doing anything that should make me nervous. I was simply meeting someone who knew more about being a superhuman than I did, and he was going to help me learn how to control my strength before I accidentally ruined my entire future.

It was practical, it was necessary, and it was important. Unfortunately, the more I repeated those facts to myself, the less convincing they sounded.

The real problem was that I wasn’t only dealing with my own thoughts. Moon was also there, lurking in the back of my mir and waiting for every opportunity to make my life more difficult than it already was. Ever since I had agreed to meet Orior she had been far too excited for my liking.

I pressed my hands against my face. “Because he’s helping me learn how to control my strength,” I argued. “That is literally the only reason I’m going. What part of that sentence is so hard to understand?”

Ivy shrugged innocently. “I understand it perfectly.”

I groaned, and the sound was loud enough that Ivy started laughing. What made the situation even worse was the fact that Moon had immediately chosen Ivy’s side.

There was absolutely no point trying to continue this conversation. The more I argued, the more entertainment Ivy seeme to get out of it. At this point, she looked like she was having the time of her life. Meanwhile, all I wanted was to survive the next few days without exposing myself as some sort of supernatural freak during the biggest race of my life.

Turning away from her, I walked back toward the mirror and adjusted the hood of my sweatshirt. I refused to let Ivy get in my head. I refused to let Moon get into my head. I had one goal tonight, and that was strictly to learn how to control my speed. That was it. Nothing else mattered, not mates, not attraction, and not whatever weird assumptions Ivy was making.

Unfortunately, staying focused became much harder when Moon decided to speak again. “Orion looked very handsome today.”

I pretended not to hear her. “I liked it when he cleaned our knee.”

I continued ignoring her. “And when he could hear our heartbeat…”

Moon laughed. “You know,” she continued, “if you stopped fighting your feelings all the time, life would be much easier.”

I gave up trying to argue and focused on grabbing my phone instead. If I continued debating with both Ivy and Moon. I’d never make it to the football field at all. Once I was sure I had everything I needed, I pulled my hood over my head and headed toward the door.

Unfortunately though, Ivy wasn’t done with me yet. As soon as I reached the door, she sat up straighter and smiled.

‘Have fun,” she called after me.

I turned around slowly. The smile on her face immediately told me she knew exactly what she was doing, and I pointed warning finger at her.
