Chapter 146

Luna’s POV

Knox had been gone for a little over thirty minutes, and I was beginning to get worried despite epeatedly telling myself there was probably nothing to worry about He had only gone back to the waterfall to get our clothes and whatever else 1 had left behind, so logically, there was no reason why he should not be back by now. Then again. I had no idea how far a the waterfall actually was from the house

Earlier, I had been too exhausted to pay attention while he carried me back, and before that, I had been following him without trying to memorize the path because I assumed he would be leading me back as well. Now I was stung all alone inside a quiet cabin in the middle of nowhere with absolutely no idea how to get back to the waterfall, no phone to call anyone with even if I somehow had a signal out here, and not the slightest clue how long I was supposed to keep waiting before I officially started panicking

Every few minutes I found myself looking toward the door, expecting Knox suddenly walk back inside with that usual unreadable expression on his face and casually tell me that he found our clothes. Every single time, the door remained s I tried distracting myself by looking around the room again, opening the little fridge out of boredom, staring through th tiny window, and even counting the wooden planks on the ceiling, but nothing worked. The silence inside the cabin somehow made every passing minute feel twice as long, and the more tire passed, the more restless I became.

It got to the point where I seriously started wondering if I should go and look for him, but almost immediately I dismisse the idea because I had absolutely no clue where to begin. The woods all looked exactly the same to me, and knowing my luck lately. I would probably take three wrong turns, get hopelessly lost, and somehow end up needing Krox to rescue me instead.

Eventually, sitting around became impossible. I needed fresh air if nothing else. I slowly stood up from the bed and walke toward the front door before stepping outside. The cool evening breeze immediately brushed against my face, making m realize something that I had somehow completely failed to notice while sitting inside. It had gotten much darker than before. The sky was no longer bright, and the sunlight had faded into the soft orange and purple colors that came just before nightfall.

I blinked in surprise as I looked around the peaceful clearing surrounding the little house. Had I really been asleep that long? Between the training under the waterfall, the walk back, falling asleep in Knox’s arms, and waiting inside the cabin. I had completely lost track of time. My first thought was that we really needed to head back to Blackridge soon, unless Knox planned on keeping me hidden out here forever. I wasn’t exactly thrilled about returning to school after everything that ha happened earlier today, but staying in the woods overnight without telling Ivy where I was would probably cause an ent el different set of problems.

She would most likely report me missing, start a search party, and then somehow find a way to blame all ty, of mix milles for kidnapping me. Honestly, considering recent events, she probably wouldn’t even be completely T

I decided to walk a little farther from the cabin, not because I actually intended to search for Knox, but because standing st wasn’t helping my nerves. I followed what I thought was the same direction we had come from earlier, making sure not to go too deep into the woods since I still wanted to find my way back to the house without embarrassing myself.

Every few steps I stopped to look around, hoping I would spot Knox returning with our things, but all I saw were endless trees, bushes, and the occasional bird flying overhead. The forest had a strange kind of beauty now that evening was sering in. It was peaceful enough that I could hear insects chirping somewhere nearby, leaves moving gently whenever the wind picked up, and distant water that I assumed came from the waterfall.

After walking what I considered my safe limit. I stopped completely Going any farther felt like asking to get lost, and I had already conected enough problems for one lifetime. Folding my arms across my chest. I scanned the trees one more time while silently hoping Knox would appear so I could complain about how long he had taken. That was when I noticed

Biovement between the trees.

fat. Thoneyshaught my eyes were playing tricks on ine Something dark had energed from deeper inside the forest But the light was facing enough that I couldn’t immediately make out what it was. I squinted harder trying to comince myself in was probably just a large dog or maybe even a deer moving through the bushes. Unfortunately, the longer I stares the less comforting that explation became.

Whatever it was looked far too large to be a normal dog and it was definely walking toward me. My heartbeat immediatel sped up. I rubbed my eyes once before looking again-hoping it would mag-ally disappear If I blacked enough times, bur didn’t. If anything, the creature became even clearer with every passtre second Thick black fur covered its enormous body its powerful legs carried it forward with terrifying confidence and even From where I stood. I could tell it was much larger than any wolf I remembered ever seeing

My brain completely forgot one very important detail, namely the fact that I myself was fechnically a werewolf now All 1 saw was an absolutely gigantic black wolf walking directly toward me in the middle of the woods while I stood there like an idiot. Before logic had any chance to catch up with panic. I let out the loudest scream’ I had produced in years, med around, and ran for my life

I honestly wish I could say I handled the situation with dignity, but I absolutely did not. I ran exactly the way people in horror movies ran when they made every terrible decision imaginable. My legs pumped as fast as they could despite still aching from everything Knox had put me through under the waterfall, my oreathing became uneven almost immediately and somewhere behind me I could hear the unmistakable sound of something very large speeding up Against all comm sense. I glanced over my shoulder for one second and instantly regretted it because the giant black wolf had broken into a full sprint.

It was chasing me. At least, that was exactly what my terrified brain believed. Of all the times for my ridiculous werewolf speed to decide not to appear, today was apparently the day it chose to behave itself.

Just my luck.

Earlier I couldn’t stop myself from almost outrunning cars, but now that an enormous wolf was behind me, my legs suddenly remembered they were exhausted. They felt heavy, weak, and painfully slow. Every step became harder than the last, and I already knew there wasn’t the slightest chance I could/cutrun something that naturally had four powerful legs instead of two tired human ones. My heart practically climbed into my throat as the sound behind me grew closer and closer until, before I even realized what was happening, the wolf darted around me and landed directly in front of my path

I skidded to an awkward stop so suddenly that I nearly fell over. My chest rose and fell rapidly while I stared straigh enormous wolf’s face. Up close, it looked even bigger than I had imagined. Its black fur almost blended into the evening shadows, its bright blue eyes seemed unnaturally intelligent, and for one ridiculous second I became absolutely that this was how I was going to die.

I

Eaten by an oversized wolf in the middle of nowhere, and somehow that telt almost insulting. The wolf didn’t sack me though. It simply stood there without moving, looking directly into my eyes so intensely that it almost feit se into my soul. I was too terrified to move. It was too close to rup around, and wasn’t stupid enough think I could high My body froze completely while my mind desperately searched for some miracle that would save me That matase unfortunately came in the form of Moon.

“Well,” Moon said lazily inside my head, ‘now that you’re done making a complete fool of yourself with all that screaming you should know that’s Knox.”

For several seconds my brain completely stopped functioning. “What I mentally shouted

“That’s Knox, Moon repeated. “Our mate.”

I stared at the wolf again, then back into its eyes. “Why didn’t you tell me that sooner” I demanded

Moon sounded far too amused. “And miss the chance to watch you embarrass yourself?” she asked unocently

I honestly wanted to strangle my own wolf. You are the worst. I muttered under my breath.
