Chapter 168

I had never thought I would be so happy to hear a doctor tell me that there was absolutely nothing wrong with me. After examining me one last time that morning, looking over every single test result they had run the day before, the doctor finally smiled and told me that I was free to leave. According to him, every result had come back completely normal. There were no signs of internal injuries, and despite the fact that I had collapsed just a few minutes after a race for reasons nobody could explain, there wasn’t a single medical reason to keep me under observation any longer.
I thanked him more times than I probably needed to before he finally laughed and told me to simply take it easy for a couple of days. The moment he left the room, I let out the deepest sigh of relief I had taken since arriving at the hospital. I honestly hated hospitals. As far as I could remember, I had never been admitted into one before. Maybe something had happened when I was very young, but if it had, I couldn’t remember any of it because my childhood memories were frustratingly incomplete.
Spending just one night in a hospital room had been enough to make me anxious from the moment the lights dimmed until the sun came back up. Every unfamiliar sound had kept me awake, every nurse walking past my room had made me look toward the door, and the strange silence that settled during the middle of the night had somehow made everything even worse. I had never realized how much I preferred sleeping in my tiny dorm room unt I was forced to spend a night somewhere else.
Thankfully, I hadn’t been left wondering how I would get back to campus because Ivy showed up bright and early the next morning exactly as she had promised. The second she walked into my room wearing one of her usual cheerful smiles. I immediately felt lighter. We chatted while I packed the few things I had brought with me, and after signing what felt like an endless number of discharge papers, we finally walked out of the hospital together. I couldn’t have been more grateful that Ivy had come to pick me up because the thought of dragging myself onto a crowded bus after such an exhausting night sounded absolutely miserable.
I was physically fine, but mentally, I felt as though I had barely slept at all. The fresh morning air hit my face the momen we stepped outside the hospital building, and I took a slow breath, happy to finally be outside those walls again. I had barely started thinking about how good it felt to leave when Ivy looked around the parking area before turning toward me
“I guess we’ll have to hail a cab,” Ivy said casually as she pulled out her phone, already looking around for an available axa
I nodded absentmindedly because that seemed like the obvious solution. Before either of us could even take another step toward the roadside, however, a white car slowly pulled up directly in front of us and came to a smooth stop I frowned immediately. The car looked expensive, but I didn’t recognize it. For a brief second. I simply stood there wondering whether the driver had mistaken us for someone else. Then the driver’s window slowly rolled down.
The moment I saw who was sitting behind the wheel, the small knot of uncertainty inside me loosened almost immedelery
It was Orion

had spent what felt like hours lying awake, staring at the ceiling, wondering whether that strange man had really been the one who somehow invaded my mind. If he had… was that even normal? Could werewolves really do something like that? I still knew so little about their world that I honestly couldn’t tell the difference between what was ordinary and what, was impossible anymore.
That line of thinking had eventually led my exhausted brain somewhere even more ridiculous.
Since I had no idea who my biological father was apart from knowing he had to be Black because my mother was white and I had inherited features from both sides, one stupid childhood habit had suddenly returned to me. When I was younger. every time I saw a Black man around town, there was always a tiny, foolish part of me that wondered if he was my father.
I had never admitted that to anyone because even as a child, I knew how silly it sounded, but it hadn’t stopped the thought from appearing every now and then. Last night, after remembering that strange man at the race, that same childish question had briefly crossed my mind again before I immediately pushed it away. There was no point entertaining fantasies like hat. A man who had disappeared before I was even born wasn’t suddenly going to appear in my life after all these years for no reason. Besides, I refused to waste my time hoping for someone who had never once tried to find me.
Shaking the uncomfortable thoughts out of my head, I forced myself back to the present before Orion noticed I had completely zoned out.
“What are you doing here?” I asked as I walked a little closer to his car, although even as the words left my mouth. I already knew the answer. It wasn’t exactly difficult to guess why one of my overly protective mates would show up if it wasn’t to drive me back to campus.
Orion smiled the moment he heard my voice, and there was obvious relief written across his face now that he could see me standing outside the hospital instead of lying in one of its rooms.
“I came to take you back to school,” he replied simply. “Did you honestly think I was going to let you get on a bus or take a
cab after you spent the night in a hospital? Not happening.” ”
His answer made me sinile despite myself because it was exactly what I had expected him to say. Before I could respond however, another engine sounded behind us.
Both Ivy and I instinctively turned around. Another car had just pulled up behind Orion’s white one, and unlike Orion’s car. this one was immediately familiar to me.
1: belonged to Ryder.
I didn’t even need to wait for confirmation because the driver’s door swung open almost instantly and sure enough, Ryder climbed out wearing a determined expression that told me he had absolutely no intention of leaving without me
Beside me. Ivy looked from Orion to Ryder before slowly turning toward the with a grin that grew water by the second
Oh she said with an amused chuckle, folding her arms across her chest This is about to be hu
I slowly clowed my eyes before pinching the bridge of my nose Not funny. Ivy. Freplied with a red sigh as booked a cy , visibly giddy friend
Unfortunately Ivy only laughed harder

thinking about it made me let out another long sigh as I silently prayed that, for once, the morning wouldn’t become dearly as chaotic as I was already expecting it to be.
