I honestly had no idea how I was supposed to respond after Theo told me to choose him. Of every answer I had expected him to give me, that one had never crossed my mind. I simply stood there staring at him while my brain struggled to catch up with the words that had just left his mouth. The room suddenly felt much quieter than before, and neither of us seemed to be in any hurry to fill the silence. I could tell by the calm expression on his face that he meant every single word he had said. He wasn’t joking, and he definitely wasn’t trying to tease me. He genuinely wanted me to choose him over the other four, and that thought alone made my heart beat a little faster.

It wasn’t because I was considering doing it. It was because I hadn’t expected anyone to be bold enough to ask me so directly. My mind quickly wandered to Orion, Ryder, Knox, and even Jace. Somehow, I couldn’t imagine any of them saying those exact words to me, at least not yet. Theo, however, had looked me straight in the eyes and asked for exactly what he wanted without trying to soften the request. For a few more seconds, I stayed completely silent, trying to come up with a response that would surprise him just as much as his request had surprised me.

Finally, I folded my arms across my chest and looked at him with a thoughtful expression before deciding to throw his own confidence back at him. “Why?” I asked calmly as I kept my eyes fixed on his. “Give me just one reason why I should choose you over the others,” I said, making sure my voice remained steady.

I genuinely wanted to know what he would say because there were countless possible answers he could have given. He could have said that he cared about me more than the others. He could have reminded me that we had already become intimate. He could have tried to convince me that we understood each other better than everyone else. Instead, Theo simply stood there looking at me with the same confident expression that seemed permanently attached to his face. He didn’t even need time to think about his answer, which somehow made me even more curious.

A low chuckle escaped him before he slowly shook his head, almost like he found my question amusing, and not once did he look away from me. His green eyes stayed locked on mine as though he wanted me to understand that he completely believed what he was about to say. “For one very simple reason,” he responded confidently. “You should choose me because I’m the better man.”

His answer was so unbelievably straightforward that I couldn’t stop myself from laughing. I rolled my eyes almost immediately, unable to believe that after everything we had been discussing, that was honestly the explanation he had chosen to give me. The confidence in his voice was so ridiculous that it became funny instead of arrogant. If anyone else had said something like that, I probably would have been annoyed, but somehow it sounded completely like Theo. It was exactly the sort of shameless answer I should have expected from him.

Still laughing softly, I took a small step backwards just to create a little distance between us before shaking my head at him. “I’ll think about it,” I responded with a small nod, still smiling despite myself. “But first, you need to make a much more practical request because asking me to choose you right now simply isn’t going to work.”

I hoped that answer would satisfy him enough for the time being because there was absolutely no way I could choose one mate over the other four when I was only just beginning to understand all of them. I had already promised myself that I was going to give every one of them a fair chance before making any decisions about where my feelings truly lay. Theo let out a slow sigh after hearing my answer, though I couldn’t tell whether he was disappointed or simply thinking carefully about what he wanted to ask next. He slipped one hand back into the pocket of his sweatpants while rubbing the back of his neck with the other. His confident smile faded slightly, replaced by a more thoughtful look that I don’t see on him very often.

After several long seconds of silence, he finally looked back at me again. “Are you sure,” he asked carefully, “that if I ask you for something else, you’ll actually give it to me?”

His question immediately made me suspicious. I narrowed my eyes at him, wondering what exactly was going through his head. After everything that had happened between us recently, I had learned that Theo had a habit of saying things I never saw coming, so naturally I was already preparing myself for another impossible request.

I frowned at him almost immediately before answering. “You’d better not ask me for something ridiculous,” I responded firmly. “Because if it’s ridiculous, then I can already tell you that I’m not granting your request.” I spoke as seriously as I could, hoping he would understand that I genuinely meant it. I had absolutely no intention of letting him trap me into agreeing to something outrageous simply because I had offered to hear him out. Theo had already shocked me once today, and I wasn’t about to underestimate him again. The way he looked at me after I finished speaking almost made me wonder whether he had already prepared his answer long before I even arrived outside his room.

Theo smiled again, but this smile was much smaller than before. It wasn’t cocky or teasing. Instead, it almost looked hopeful. “Besides wanting you to choose me,” he responded quietly, “there’s something else that I want from you.” He paused briefly, almost like he wanted to make sure I was paying attention before continuing. “I want more of your time.”

His words caught me completely off guard again. Out of everything I had expected him to ask for, that certainly wasn’t it. Somehow, the request sounded much simpler than asking me to choose him, yet it also felt strangely more personal. Time wasn’t something you could buy or replace. Giving someone your time meant choosing to be with them when you could have been somewhere else, and perhaps that was why his request suddenly felt much heavier than I initially thought it would.

I stared at him in confusion for several long seconds before finally finding my voice again. “How exactly am I supposed to do that?” I asked honestly.

I wasn’t trying to avoid his request. I genuinely didn’t understand what he meant. Between classes, track practice, and somehow trying to keep up with normal life, I already felt like there weren’t enough hours in the day. On top of that, there were four other mates besides Theo who also wanted my attention. I honestly couldn’t imagine how I was supposed to suddenly create extra time that didn’t already exist.

Theo didn’t hesitate this time. It was almost like he had rehearsed this request inside his head long before I knocked on his door. “Give me your weekend,” he responded calmly, watching my reaction carefully. “We’ll go on a proper date this time.” His expression remained serious as he continued speaking. “Not only that, we’ll spend the entire weekend together. Just the two of us.” He paused briefly before adding something that made me understand exactly why he wanted things that way. “That way, I won’t have to worry about one of your other mates showing up and stealing you away from me halfway through.”

Where exactly did he plan on taking me? Would we even stay on campus? What would everyone else think if I suddenly disappeared with Theo for two whole days? More importantly, how in the world was I supposed to explain something like that to the other four?

I blinked several times before finally managing to speak. “Are you seriously asking me to spend an entire weekend on some kind of trip with you?” I asked slowly, making sure I hadn’t misunderstood anything he had just said.

I searched his face for any sign that he was joking, but unfortunately for my rapidly beating heart, he looked completely serious. There wasn’t even the smallest trace of amusement in his expression anymore. Instead, he looked more determined than ever, almost like he had already decided that this weekend together was going to happen regardless of how impossible the idea currently sounded.

Theo gave one firm nod without breaking eye contact. “That’s exactly what I’m asking,” he responded confidently. His lips slowly curved into a small smile before he folded his arms across his chest. “So,” he continued in an almost playful voice, “what’s your answer?” He tilted his head ever so slightly before adding the final sentence that completely robbed me of whatever words I had left. “Is it yes… or a ‘yes’?”

I could only continue staring at him in complete disbelief. My brain felt like it had completely stopped working. My mouth opened slightly, but no words came out. I wasn’t angry, and I wasn’t even offended. I was simply too stunned to form a coherent response on the spot.
