Chapter 19

JUNA

The words kept replaying in my head like a badgong stuck on repeat. Instead of sending him straight to hell, where he and his four annoying friends belonged, I’d stood there like an idiot and said, I’ll think about it.

Me, the same Luna who’d spent the last few days of her life dodging them, running from them, and cursing them under my breath every time their scent hit me. And yet, when Theo asked me out with that stupid dimpled grin, I hadn’t shut hire down hard enough. I’d left the door cracked open.

By the time I got back to the dorm, showered off the sweat and track dust, and crawled into bed, the realization finally me like a brick.

Telling him I’d think about it wasn’t neutral. It was basically me saying I was open to more conversation, more contact, and more of whatever this weird, hot, confusing thing was between us.

I groaned into my pillow and shook my head so hard my wet curls slapped my cheeks. How could I be this stupid?

I let out a muffled scream, half frustration, half embarrassment, before I could stop myself. Ivy looked up from her phone on the other side of the room. She was already in pajamas, legs tucked under her blanket, screen light glowing on her face.

You okay?she asked, her voice soft and worried. You’ve been acting weird ever since you got back earlier.

1 rolled onto my back and stared at the ceiling. It’s nothing

She didn’t buy it, and I could still feel her eyes on me.

She gasped a little. Waitdid you check the school social media pages?

The question hit like cold water. The viral photo, the comments, the names, and the hate. I’d completely forgotten about all

of it the second Theo asked me out. His stupid question had pushed everything else out of my head.

I sighed and rubbed my face with both hands. I should have just listened to you. I shouldn’t have looked, but yeah… I checked, and now I know half the girls in this school think I’m an attentionseeking bitch.

Ivy let out a long, sympathetic sigh. She set her phone down and scooted to the edge of her bed so she could face me better,

ľ How are you feeling?she asked quietly.

I shrugged, even though she couldn’t see it in the dark. Honestly? It sucks, but it’s not like I can change their minds. So I might as well not dwell on it too much.”

stepped out of the dorm and pulled the door shut behind me a little harder than necessary. The hallway smelled like someone’s burnt popcom from the microwave down the hall, and for a second I almost turned around and went back inside, but I didn’t
