Chapter 246: Aurora? Who Is-
(Author’s POV)
He turned away.
That was the version of her he kept – the one who still had that light in her eyes.
A year later, he came back and walked through the wrong corridor of a hospital and saw her through a glass partition. She was lying in a hospital bed, pale as the sheets, with a newborn beside her. No husband in sight. No one at all.
He stood in that corridor for a long time.
The girl with the bright eyes was gone. Whatever Jasper had done to her in that year, it had cost her something that didn’t come back easily.
Phineas looked at the newborn. Then back at her.
He turned and walked away.
But he didn’t forget. And he didn’t forgive. And when the time came, he made absolutely sure that Jasper felt every bit of it.
Jasper came out of the Everett Global building at half past three and sat in his car for several minutes
without starting the engine.
Then he drove home.
Victoria was in the sitting room when he came in. He didn’t stop to speak to her. He went straight upstairs, found Sienna in the bedroom, and closed the door behind him.
Sienna looked at his face and felt her stomach drop.
“Jasper-”
“Don’t.” He cut her off before she could start. “Don’t tell me you don’t know what this is about.”
“I genuinely don’t know what Phineas told you, but whatever it was-”
“He didn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know.” Jasper’s voice was flat. “I warned you. Weeks ago. I told you to leave Aurora alone. I told you it wasn’t worth it.”
“I haven’t done anything to Aurora.”
He laughed. It wasn’t a kind sound. “You haven’t done anything.”
“I haven’t.”
He crossed to the desk, picked up a folder, and dropped it in front of her. “Martha Higgins. Aurora’s mother. Former nanny for the Rathbone family. Close ties to your family going back years.” He watched her face. “You want to tell me again that nobody put her up to anything?”

Sienna’s mouth opened. Closed.
“A woman with that kind of history doesn’t go after her own daughter without a reason, Jasper said. “And the reason has your fingerprints all over it.”
“That’s not-” Her voice cracked. Her eyes filled. “Jasper, I swear to you, I didn’t-”
“Stop crying.” He said it quietly, which was worse than if he’d shouted, “It doesn’t work on me anymore” She pressed her fingers to her lips. The tears spilled anyway.
“Do you have any idea what you’ve done?” His voice had gone tired. “If it weren’t for you, the Rathbone family wouldn’t be in Phineas’s crosshairs. My father’s company- what’s left of it – wouldn’t be hemorrhaging like this.” He rubbed his face. “I should’ve seen it sooner. I should’ve seen all of it sooner.”
“Please don’t say that.” She reached for his arm. “Please-”
He stepped back. “I need you to go stay at your father’s house for a few days.”
She froze. “What?”
“Just a few days. I need to think.”
“Are you-” Her voice went high and tight. “Are you talking about divorce? We’ve been married less than a
month, Jasper, you can’t-”
“I’m not talking about divorce.” He picked up his jacket from the back of the chair. “I’m talking about
needing space to deal with the disaster you helped create, without having to look at you while I do it.”
He walked out.
The front door closed. Sienna stood in the middle of the bedroom and listened to the silence settle
around her.
Downstairs, Victoria sat in the armchair by the window, staring at nothing. She’d heard enough through the ceiling to understand the shape of it. She didn’t want to understand more.
She picked up her phone and called her housekeeper.
“I’m taking Rosalind to Sunday service this weekend,” she said. “Arrange it.”
She needed the quiet of the church. She needed something that wasn’t this house.
Sienna arrived at the Rathbone estate just before six. Her eyes were red and her mascara had tracked down her cheeks and she didn’t bother to fix it before she walked in.
Richard was in the study. Stefan was already there, standing by the window with his arms folded.
Sienna went straight to her father and pressed her face against his shoulder.
“Jasper sent me away,” she said. “Because of Aurora. Because of everything she’s done to turn Phineas against us-”

Richard patted her back, confused. “Aurora? Who is-”
