Chapter 247: What’s Wrong?

(Author’s POV)

“Jasper’s ex-wife,” Stefan said. He didn’t look away from the window. “She married Phineas Everett. She’s

been inside the Everett family’s inner circle for months.”

Richard pulled back slightly. “Phineas Everett’s wife.”

“Yes.”

The room went quiet.

Stefan turned from the window. “The contract losses. The blocked financing. The distributor who pulled out last week.” He looked at his father. “It’s not a market correction. Someone is applying pressure.

Systematically.”

Richard’s expression shifted. “You think it’s connected.”

“I think someone in this family did something to make an enemy of Phineas Everett.” Stefan looked at Sienna. Then at Sebastian, who had been sitting in the corner pretending to check his phone. “And I think one of you knows exactly what.”

Sebastian didn’t look up.

“Sebastian.” Stefan’s voice was sharp. “Put the phone down.”

“It’s not that serious,” Sebastian said. “Phineas is overreacting. It’ll blow over.”

The sound of breaking glass cut him off.

Richard had swept the tumbler off the desk. It shattered on the floor at Sebastian’s feet. Sebastian

flinched back.

“Do you think this is a joke?” Richard’s voice shook. “We are weeks away from being unable to service our debt. Weeks. If we don’t find new financing, we lose everything. The company. The properties. Everything your grandfather built.” He stared at his son. “So you will tell me exactly what you did. Right now.”

Sebastian’s jaw worked. He looked at the broken glass. Then at his father’s face.

He talked.

It came out in pieces – what he’d arranged, who he’d used, how he’d thought it would stay quiet. By the time he finished, the room was very still.

Richard’s hand moved to his inside jacket pocket. He found the small bottle, shook out a nitroglycerin tablet, and placed it under his tongue. His eyes closed. He leaned back in the chair slowly.

Stefan watched him for a moment. Then he looked at Sebastian and Sienna with an expression that had moved past anger into something colder.

“You’re both grown adults,” he said. “And you’ve been running around settling personal grudges like you’re still in secondary school.” He turned away. “While the family burns.”

“Stefan-” Sienna started.

“Don’t.” He held up a hand. “I don’t want to hear it.” He was already thinking ahead, already calculating. The only way out of this ran through Phineas. Which meant it ran through William. Which meant tomorrow, he and his father would have to walk into that house and ask for something they had no right to ask for.

He would do it. He would swallow every bit of pride he had and do it.

Sienna retreated to the guest bedroom and locked the door behind her.

She sat on the edge of the bed in the dark. Jasper had sent her away. Stefan was furious. Her father had nearly collapsed. And at the center of all of it, somehow, was Aurora – a woman who had once been nobody, who had grown up in the shadow of Sienna’s own family, who was now untouchable.

She pressed her hands flat against her knees and stared at the wall.

Was there really no way out left?

(Aurora’s POV)

I had no appetite at dinner.

Mrs. Potts had gone out of her way to prepare everything I usually loved – roasted chicken legs, cream of mushroom soup, a fresh garden salad. She’d even arranged the table with extra care. But I just sat there, staring at it, my fork untouched beside my plate.

There was something wrong in my stomach. Not pain, exactly. More like a heaviness, a blockage, as if something had settled in and refused to move. I pressed my palm against my forehead and sat there for a few minutes, hoping the feeling would pass.

It didn’t.

I set down my fork, pushed back from the table, and went upstairs to lie down.

Phineas came home to find the food almost entirely untouched. I heard him asking Mrs. Potts about it later – his voice carrying faintly through the hallway. Then footsteps, quick and purposeful, and the bedroom door opened.

He sat on the edge of the bed. The mattress dipped under his weight.

“Aurora.” His voice was low, careful. “What’s wrong?”
