Chapter 183
When I descended the stairs, I found Regis pacing the small living area with the restless energy of a caged predator, his hands clenched and his jaw tight
with barely–suppressed fury. He looked up the instant I appeared, and I felt the bond pulse with his need to know that I was safe, that I was whole, that the
threat hadn’t touched me beyond what I’d witnessed.
“She’s settled, I said quietly, crossing to where he stood and letting him pull me against his chest, feeling his heartbeat hammer against my cheek. “Physically, she’s not badly hurt. Bruising, shock, but nothing that won’t heal. The rest…” I trailed off, not sure how to articulate the depth of trauma I’d
seen in Nina’s eyes, the way she’d looked at Regis as if expecting him to transform into a monster at any moment.
“Tell me exactly what you saw,” Regis said, his voice low and controlled in a way that I knew meant he was holding himself in check through sheer force of will. “What did Silas say to her? What did he threaten?”
So I told him, keeping my voice as steady as I could while I recounted Silas’s words about Nina’s mother, about the torture and violations that had been inflicted, about his casual mention of witch blood and his obvious intent to continue what had been started years ago. Regis listened without interrupting. but I felt his arms tighten around me with each new revelation, felt Valdor’s presence surge closer to the surface as the full picture of Silas’s depravity became clear. When I finished, he was silent for a long moment, his breathing harsh and uneven.
“He was going to take her, Regis said finally, and it wasn’t a question. “That’s what all of this has been about. The observation assignment, the scrutiny of your work, the way he’s been circling the medical station. He was looking for an opportunity to isolate her, to take her somewhere she couldn’t be found.
The certainty in his voice sent ice through my veins because I knew he was right, knew that if I hadn’t witnessed that scene in the birch grove, if I hadn’t acted when I did, Nina would already be gone. Disappeared into whatever hell Silas had prepared for her, with no one the wiser until it was far too late.
“He’s using her identity as leverage,” I said, understanding clicking into place. “The witch blood. If she tries to run, tries to tell anyone what he’s done, he can expose what she is and turn the entire Pack against her. She’s been trapped this whole time, hasn’t she? Running from him, hiding, trying to survive
while he hunted her.”
Regis’s expression was grim. “And now he knows we’re aware. Now he knows she has protection, that she’s told us enough for us to be a threat to him. He pulled back slightly, cupping my face in his hands with a gentleness that contrasted sharply with the violence I could feel coiled inside him. “I need you to talk to her. I need you to try to get her to open up about what happened, about who else might be involved, about anything that could help us build a case against Silas that the Council can’t ignore. But Eileen- his voice dropped lower, more serious, -be careful. If she really is what he says she is, if there’s witch heritage in her bloodline, that changes things. The old laws about witches are brutal, and there are Council members who would see her dead just for
existing.
I nodded, understanding the weight of what he was asking, understanding that Nina’s survival might depend on how carefully we navigated the next few hours. ‘She trusts me, I think. Or at least, she trusts me more than anyone else right now. Let me try.”
He kissed my forehead, a lingering press of lips that felt like both blessing and prayer, then released me with obvious reluctance, I climbed the stairs again, knocked softly on Nina’s door, and waited until I heard her faint “come in before entering.
