(Author’s POV)
"Your majesty, is there anything we can do for you? Your wish is our command," Silvia spoke with grace and assurance.
"Yes, Sire. Tell us, what can we do for you?" Vinicio added. His voice sounded unlike himself, filled with utmost respect and seriousness.
The sound of Jacob’s light chuckle filled the room’s atmosphere, "Hahha~ ... you all~ ... are speaking like I am~ .... dyin ~g. Did you forg ~et ... I have alr ~eady ... died onc ~e, acc ~ord~ing to the hum ~an standa ~rds."
"Your majesty, we have no such intention. We want you to have a long and prosperous reign over all of the Vampires," Silvia’s voice came out firm.
"Of course, my king. We ’ALL’ want you to live a long and healthy life," Catherine jumped in as well. She wasn’t going to let Silvia steal all the thunder and leap in advantage.
"I didn’t know~ ... you all were worri ~ed for my heal ~th .... this muc ~h," Jacob’s voice resembled his usual lazy, elegant tone, though he still sounded exhausted. "By t~he way~ .... I call ~ed all of you here~ .... for an~ ... urgen ~t matter."
"Please, my king. Feel free to discuss anything with us," Catherine’s tone sounded monotone, but the urgency brimming inside her could be seen in her eyes.
"Good~ .... it’s good~ ... to hear that from you~ .... Rich ~ards ..." he spoke, a brief smile played on his now bluish purple lips. "You mi~ ght have alr~ eady guess the pu~ rpose," he paused and continued, "It is regard ~ing .... the head’s position~ ..." Jacob muttered. "As I cannot leave my chamb ~er until the heal ~ing ritu ~al is con~ clu~ ded, I want to~ ... appoi~nt the hea~d for the tim~e being."
Though no one said anything, the desire in their eyes was unquestionable. As the person ruling the whole of the Vampires, Jacob’s words were law~ ... and only if all the Elders, unanimously, disagreed with his decision could it be overturned. So, whatever he would say from now on, they were obligated to consent. Because there was no way any of them could reach a consensus and oppose Jacob.
The anticipation was palpable as Jacob once again spoke, "I, the Kin~g of Vampi~res~ .... Jaco~b Larso~n ... appoint~ .... Elder~ ...."
Catherine clenched her fists, her lips pressed, her eyes dilating. Her expectations were at a new high. She was sure her name would be called. Simply, there can be no rivalry between her and that, lowborn, Silvia Silver.
"I appoint .... Elder~ .... Richards as the~ .... head’s~ ... secret~ary~ ...." Jacob completed his words.
Brian grinned from ear to ear. After hearing Catherine’s name, he had skipped the part that was said after that. He couldn’t contain his excitement and blurted out, "Wise choice~ .... Your majesty~ .... Elder Richards is the wisest choice for the head position."
After his announcement, there was a pin drop silence. The deathlike stillness was so extreme that the warm room turned glacial, bone chilling.
Even Iris and the other healers present were shocked to the core. A mere human was given the responsibility of leading the Vampires. Even the thought was ridiculous to them. But now with Jacob’s unhinged declaration, his intention to actually handover the title as well as his business empire was evident.
The first person to break the silence was Brian Tape. He was furious to hear Fabian’s name, "I OBJECT, FIRMLY. Fabian may be attached to you by blood, but he has no attribute nor any sort of trait to take charge of the Vampires." He didn’t like Silvia or Vinicio, but not more than Fabian, ’That mutt is going to lead us? Has the seawater gone inside Jacob’s head, turning him totally insane?’
"I agree with what Elder Tape just said, your majesty. Fabian, I know he has the potential, but right now isn’t the time. The news about your accident has made waves all around the world, and all eyes are on us. The humans, the vampires, the werewolves, everyone. When they get to know that the Vampire’s proxy is an ordinary human, we will become a laughing stock," Silvia surprisingly backed Brian’s words.
"Your majesty, you can’t be partial on this. I, Catherine Richards, refuse to serve under a human being," she stated imposingly. "Fabian Stephens isn’t fit for the role."
After a ten second silence, Jacob hummed, "Hmm~ ... and what are~ .... you~r thou ~ghts on this, Card~ amone?"
