(Author’s POV)
"Elixir? What kind of elixir?" Alaric was quick to ask.
Iris cut in, "It’s a secret healing curative that I am going to prepare personally. For that, I need all the necessary components." Chris added, "I am not asking you to get it for my master. I will be the one getting it myself. But~ ..."
"You have a long list of ’buts’, Secretary Shadow. It’s like never ending," Dion commented in a quirky tone. "Just get straight to the point. What do you want?"
"What I ask of you is that, can you all, protect the master in my absence?" Chris finally said it.
"Protect, the Vampire King? Us? Why? Why will we do that?" Dion asked, his brows wrinkled. "You sure have many vampire fellows who can do that, umm."
"Secretary Shadow, why do you want us, the werewolves, the Lycans, to play Mr. Larson’s bodyguards?" Alaric questioned bluntly.
"Because~ .... there is no one that can be trusted here," Chris stated.
"And we can be?" This one came from Brave. "Don’t you think if you leave him in our hands, we would do something to him? What’s your reason for trusting us?"
"If you had wanted him to die, you wouldn’t have accepted my request yesterday. Nor either of you would have stepped in and saved him. And~ ... the most important reason is~ .... Lycan King Noah wants peace and quiet among all the beings. It goes without saying that you all have the same belief. I can tell that. So~ .... Please~ .... I ask you all to look after the Vampire King until my return," Chris concluded, his voice calm and collected.
"Ohhooo~ .... what a great and heartfelt speech. But tell me this, why aren’t you asking those colorful Elders of yours to safeguard him~ ...." Dion pointed towards the main door, though he was already aware of the answer.
Chris exhaled a heavy breath, "Young Alpha~ .... as I said earlier. No one can be trusted," He gestured for Iris to leave. She raised her right brow in defiance, but when Chris gave her another stern look, she went away.
"Apart from the local authorities, our most reliable people are investigating the crash accident as well," he started.
"Wasn’t it a malfunction?" Alaric queried with interest.
"On the front, it seemed like that even to us, but our internal investigation is still going on, and some of the things indicated otherwise," Chris conveyed.
"So, there might be a possibility that any of the Vampire Elders are involved. Is that correct?" Brave asserted.
"Any or maybe~ .... each and every," Dion added as well.
Chris nodded, "That is why~ .... I can’t leave the master like that. If it weren’t necessary, I wouldn’t have asked something like this of you."
The room fell into another round of stillness. Chris remained rooted, his head a little bowed in their direction. After a few seconds, Alaric spoke, his words filled with authority, "We~ .... We need to discuss it amongst ourselves, Secretary Shadow."
"Sure~ ..." Chris said almost immediately. He was glad they didn’t decline him outright.

"Hey, Ra-ra, what are you looking at so intently?" Yelena probed as she got up from the dining table.
