(Author’s POV)
"Mr. Fabian Stephens will be in charge of the Larson mansion, in my stead," Chris stated calmly.
His declaration was met with raised eyebrows from all three Lycans that were present. Giving such a tedious position to someone who is still inexperienced and fully fit physically, they couldn’t help but be surprised by this decision. Plus, before their visit to Esteria, they had never heard of Fabian’s name before.
Dion was the first one to voice out his opinion on it, "Isn’t it quite a burdensome and challenging task, supervising the place where Vampire King is residing. Especially in current circumstances. Isn’t it too much for Mr. Stephens, who is still recovering from the drowning incident?"
"Thank you for your concern, but there is absolutely no burden on me whatsoever. I am fit and fine as a fiddle. As for your other worry, Secretary Shadow has done a commendable job, taking care of Chairman Larson and the mansion so far, and I will follow in his footsteps," Fabian replied without any hitch.
Chris was a little taken aback by the words of commendation Fabian had just said about him. Most of the time, they have been at odds, although it was mostly from Fabian’s side. Nevertheless, it was something he had not expected.
Dion arched his brow in amusement as he said, "It’s true, what Secretary Shadow has done for the Vampire Clan and the king so far is laudable. But filling in his shoes isn’t going to be easy. Plus, drawing any sort of comparison with Secretary Shadow wouldn’t be fair either. Although he is a human, he has been by Chairman Larson’s side for more than three decades. He knows the ins and outs, the dangers quite well." He was indirectly throwing shade at Fabian.
Chris interrupted, "I assure you about that, Young Alpha Dion. Mr. Stephens will ensure seamless operations regarding the mansion and the other related businesses. The master, as well as I, have utmost confidence in him and his capability."
"Ohh~ really ....? That’s interesting," Dion remarked, his eyes settled on Fabian, who was looking back at him. "Prof. Stephens, you must be overjoyed to see that they have so much belief in you. I hope you live upto it." He smiled in his signature, charming style and left it at that.
Dion was trying to observe Fabian closely. Fabian Stephens was acting all calm, no jittery feeling, nothing. But he found it quite unusual.
Normally, from what he had seen, when someone as powerless as he had been given such a responsibility, they were bound to feel hesitant and unsure. But this seemingly normal-looking human, he showed no sign of tentativeness.
He was impressed, as well as felt a bit odd about him. Something definitely was amiss.
Soon, Iris entered the living room, greeted them with a nod and stated, in a formal manner, "The Vampire King has woken up." After the brief meeting last night, Jacob had once again fallen into a deep slumber. He had exerted a lot of strength, so they didn’t know when he would be able to wake up again.
Listening to Iris’s words, Fabian sprang up on his feet and asked excitedly, "He has awakened? Healer Hector, can I see him?" Ever since the plane crash, he has been dying to see his grandfather. He wanted to see with his own eyes whether he was fine or not. He wanted hear his voice once again. He wanted to feel his hand on his head.
Iris, in a rather detached voice, said, "He had ordered that he wishes to speak with you~ .... She paused deliberately, ~ .... keeping Fabian on the edge and then continued, "Young Alpha Brave, Young Alpha Dion, and Lycan princess, Nora."
