"Do you like me, Denver Brooks?" Amelia’s abrupt question stunned not just him, but her as well. Silence engulfed the two as only the rustling sound of leaves and the chirping of birds filled the atmosphere.
When she got no reply for a while, Amelia pulled away her hand awkwardly, "Uhhhh~ .... Forget what I said. *Smack on the forehead* look at me, blabbering absolute nonsense." Then, without waiting for him, she started to march forward, her face resembling the color of a beetroot, ’Aishhhh~ .... What the~ ... what the fuck did I just say? Dear god, please save me from this embarrassment. It is all because Perry filled all that garbage in my head. He definitely doesn’t like me, I can tell~ .... What if he tells others about this~ .... What do I do now?’
My girl once again was entangled in her thoughts. Denver’s sudden voice pulled her back to reality, "Don’t you want to hear my answer?"
Her steps halted, but she didn’t turn around; her face was changing shade like that of a chameleon. She then heard the crushing of fallen leaves. Denver was walking towards her, narrowing the distance, "If you asked a question, it is only right you get an answer for that. Isn’t that right?" he spoke.
With each sound his footsteps made, Amelia’s heart beating wildly inside her chest. To cover up her blunder, she spouted, "No need. As I said. I just blabbered some nonsense." But that didn’t make him stop. When he was just a few inches behind her, he finally spoke again, his breath fanning on her nape, "I don’t think it was all nonsense, Ame~Lia."
The way her name rolled out of his tongue, the magnetic, raspy sound made her shudder from head to toe. She looked back, they were now just centimetres apart. "I~ ... Den~ ... Denver~ ...."
"Ssssshhhhh," Denver placed a finger on her lips, silencing her. Amelia stared into his black pitched eyes, which held something raw, something intense, deeply. "Amelia~ .... Now that you have asked, I will tell you."
Amelia’s breath hitched, her throat parched, but she couldn’t distance herself from his captivating gaze, as he continued, "Amelia Clinton~ .... I do~ .... like you." She couldn’t even comprehend his answer when, the next second, his face came even closer, his lips brushing hers, ever so softly.
She was too slow to react; actually, she was stupefied. Denver, taking it as a consent, met her lips once again, his eyes closed, he was too absorbed in that moment.
Amelia soon snapped out of her initial shock and pushed him back. The next moment, reflexively, her hand raised as she slapped him hard; the sound echoed. When she saw his reddened cheek with her hand imprint, she realized what she had done.
"I~ ..." She tried to explain, but Denver held his hand out and just said, "I think I got my answer loud and clear. Sorry for the misunderstanding." He then walked ahead and said, "Let’s go."
The entire hike after that, he didn’t utter a single word, and Amelia was just too ashamed to say anything at all. It was not her intent to hit him like that. It was something that happened out of reflex. After all, countless boys had approached her, but she had rejected them all and hadn’t let any of them near her. This was the first time someone came so close to her, intimately.
The bright, sunny weather had taken a turn all of a sudden, as dark clouds started looming in the sky. Though it was still daytime, the visibility had dropped a lot. Thankfully, Denver had all the necessary things in his backpack. He took off the torch, uttered, "Excuse me~ ..." took her cuff and started walking. He then added, "Don’t misunderstand. Ms. Doull asked me to look after you. That’s all."
Amelia felt even more guilty. She was about to apologize when they both heard an imposing sound, the thumping of footsteps, growling voice followed behind. They both became alert and looked around. Instead of her sleeve, he was now holding her hand tightly, their fingers laced through.
