After much contemplation, Aurora couldn’t think of a solution beyond throwing Zane back into the military camp.
Heath glanced at her, suggesting, “There’s a military exercise in a couple of days. If you don’t pick him up today, he could participate in
it.”
‘Exercise? What kind of exercise?” Aurora inquired.
Heath pulled up some information, explaining, “It’s a realistic drill we conduct without prior notice to the new recruits, to test their reaction skills. It’s sort of a final exam after their training period.”
An idea sparked in Aurora’s mind as she looked at Heath, “What if Zane participates in this simulated exercise and witnesses the ‘death of his comrades? Could that not enhance his immersion into the role?”
Heath nodded, “It’s possible. Many actors immerse themselves in real–life experiences to better embody their characters. Zane experiencing it firsthand might just do the trick.”
However, Aurora hesitated, “But wouldn’t that be too cruel? Watching his comrades ‘die‘…”
Heath reassured her, “It’s just an exercise. No one will actually die. Every trainee participates in it. Zane would just be joining mid–term.”
Aurora nodded, “Alright, then. Let’s wait for the exercise to conclude before we bring Zane back.”
Zane was still in his dorm, waiting for Aurora to send a car to pick him up. By his calculations, today was the day.
Suddenly, an alarm blared outside. Zane scoffed and remained seated on his bed, unmoved. He considered it a deceptive drill; he was about to leave and had no intention of participating in their games.
However, the alarm persisted, unlike the brief alerts used to rouse them before. The sound of people running in the corridors grew, and someone burst into Zane’s room, dragging him outside, shouting, “This isn’t a drill!” as they headed towards the back hill.
Confused, Zane was pulled behind a tree on the hill, finding himself next to the dark–skinned man from before. Zane asked, “What’s this about?”
The man, equally perplexed, shook his head, “No idea. Just heard it’s not a drill and we had to run. I grabbed a gun on the way.”
Leaning against the tree, a blade of grass dangling from his mouth, Zane dismissively said, “Sure, probably just another trick.”
The man joined him, adding, “Whatever, let’s just stay put.”
They sat there for nearly half an hour, boredom setting in, when suddenly a gunshot rang out.
Both Zane and the man jumped, startled. Real gunfire wasn’t part of their usual drills!
They exchanged a bewildered glance, murmuring, “Could this be real?”
Zane was on the verge of tears, cursing Aurora for putting him in this situation. He thought it was just a crash course in training, not a live firefight.
Chapter 238
The man, now scared, mentioned, “I heard some terrorist group has been causing trouble around here recently. Could it be them?
Zane’s disbelief grew, “Seriously, my luck can’t be this bad, can it?”
He urged the man to stay hidden, “Let’s not go out. Maybe someone will come to rescue us?”
The man looked at him, saying, “What are you talking about? We are the military. Who’s going to rescue us if not ourselves?”
Zane muttered, “I’m not military…”
Another gunshot, accompanied by a scream, convinced them this was no drill.
Zane insisted, “Don’t go out! Going out now is suicide. We don’t even know how many they are. Let’s wait for darkness and then scout.”
The man thought it over and agreed, hunkering down beside Zane in the underbrush by the tree.
As darkness fell, more screams were heard. Their side seemed to be taking heavy losses.
The man grew anxious, “It’s dark now. I’ll go check things out.”
Zane shrank back, not moving. He wasn’t from here. He was the heir of a wealthy family, an idol revered in the entertainment industry. He planned to return to his glamorous life, not die in this desolate place.
