"And another thing," Catherine Vinton's tone shifted to a warning.
"You're a rough military man, Jerrick. All you know is fighting, and you carry this intimidating, lethal aura around with you."
"But when you go see your sister, you need to clean yourself up. Make yourself look presentable."
"Smile more when you see her. Don't look so fierce. Our Serena is timid, sweet, and fragile. If you scare our precious girl, I'll skin you alive when you get back!"
Jerrick sighed helplessly at her nagging, but his lips curved into an involuntary smile. "I know, Mom."
"I promise I'll dress sharp and smile a lot. I absolutely won't scare our little princess."
"That's more like it," Catherine said, finally satisfied. She added a few more reminders for him to stay safe and not neglect his health for the mission before hanging up.
Jerrick stared at the darkened screen, reaching up to rub his temples.
Unbidden, the image of a certain girl flashed in his mind.
He let out a low breath and shook his head with a quiet laugh.
It seemed the impression the lethal huntress left on him tonight was running far too deep.
...
Phelps Prescott was suffocating with rage.
Thanks to the airport fiasco, he had been thoroughly humiliated in front of competitors from around the globe.
It stung the most with the teams from the United Realmon States and Caldoria.
Originally, Phelps had planned to leverage his status in Severia and the Prescott family's immense wealth to win over these powerhouse nations. He wanted to use them to step on the Elyndorian team and elevate Severia's prestige.
But what happened instead?
He had spent the afternoon throwing his weight around, only to get slapped in the face by Chairman Moore of the Skyline Group. They had even publicly blacklisted him, essentially declaring that dogs and Prescotts were not allowed.
Skyline had dragged the Prescott family's pride through the mud right in front of every national team.
He had planned a lavish event to win everyone over, but it quickly turned into a complete joke.
Not a single person from the United Realmon States or Caldoria showed up.
Even the teams that had verbally RSVP'd suddenly found excuses to cancel.
Phelps waited in the empty venue, his expression growing darker by the minute until he finally smashed his wine glass against the floor.
He couldn't swallow this insult.
Storming out of the hotel, he drove straight to the Skyline Seven-Star Hotel.
On the way, he dialed his father's number.
"Dad," Phelps said, his voice dropping with suppressed fury. "I need to know. Did the Elyndorian team's stay at the Skyline penthouse actually get officially approved by the Organizing Committee?"
On the other end of the line, Desmond Prescott, having already verified the facts, gave him a definitive yes.
