Her gloves were slick with gore.
Even for a man accustomed to high-stakes power plays, Julian's pupils contracted sharply.
"Serena!"
His expression shifted. Ignoring the horrifying Obsidian Augments littering the floor, he strode quickly to her side.
He didn't even notice the blood staining his expensive leather shoes.
His usually calm, composed face—a face that wouldn't twitch if the sky collapsed—now held genuine panic. "Serena, what happened here?"
He hastily set the luxury takeout on the coffee table.
His eyes darted over her, searching for injuries.
Only when he was certain she was unharmed did he let out a breath.
But the protective ache in his eyes didn't fade in the slightest.
"Did they frighten you?"
Julian crouched slightly to meet her eye level. "Are you hungry after all that fighting? I brought your favorites. Hazel already taste-tested everything for you."
Serena remained crouched, the knife still lodged in the Augment's skull.
At Julian's voice, she looked up, a soft smile breaking through her cold exterior. "I'm fine, Julian."
The lethal, chilling aura that had surrounded her vanished, replaced by an unexpectedly gentle warmth.
When she smiled like that, she looked completely innocent.
Even her voice softened. "I'll be done in a second."
She glanced over at Nicholas. "Clear the dining table and get the food set up."
"Right away, my love," Nicholas beamed, instantly slipping into obedience as he hurried over to prep the table.
