The rapid clacking of her keyboard continued. "Recently, someone on the black market has been offering top dollar for a serum that can stabilize special human specimens. If you board using this identity, you'll be able to get close to Black Sun's Obsidian Augment program without being hunted as their sole target the second you step foot on the ship."
Serena raised an eyebrow. "Works for me."
Hazel sounded incredibly smug. "Obviously. When have I ever missed?"
Serena chuckled, then drawled as if suddenly remembering something, "Don't let this slip."
"Slip to who?" Hazel asked.
"To Julian."
Hazel was speechless.
The line went dead quiet for several seconds.
Then came Hazel's awkward cough. "Why would I ever tell Julian?"
Except her voice sounded entirely unconvincing.
Serena hummed a questioning note, layering her tone with intimidation.
Hazel immediately patted her chest in a solemn vow. "Relax! Sure, Julian takes me out for amazing food, but do I look like someone who can be bought with a meal?"
"I absolutely will not say a word to Julian."
Serena arched an eyebrow. "You'd better not."
Hazel coughed lightly. "Don't worry, my lips are sealed. Seriously."
They exchanged a few more words before ending the call.
Hazel set her phone down and stretched her arms.
She had just gotten back to the Lancaster estate from her errand.
She hadn't attended the gala tonight because Demon had suddenly sent her to the Ghost Alliance to intercept some encrypted intel.
The lead was tied to the black markets on the outskirts of Whitecliffe Harbor, and it had taken quite a bit of time.
By the time she rushed back to Vaelion City, the gala was practically over.
She had planned to sneak in, take a shower, and go straight to sleep without waking anyone.
Instead, the moment she touched down, she was handed another mission by Demon.
Drafted into free labor yet again.
Hazel rubbed her temples. "Honestly, that Demon. She agrees to everything to their faces, but behind their backs, she's still scheming to go alone."
If Serena was going.
Then she was going too!
