Jasper scoffed. "You don't have food at your own house?"
"I do," Nicholas replied.
"Then why the hell are you at my house?"
Nicholas answered lazily, "The food at the Blackwood estate doesn't come with Serena."
Jasper was enraged.
His grip on his fork tightened dangerously.
He really wanted to stab this manipulative bastard right in the forehead.
Jasper resorted to sarcasm. "A grown man like Mr. Blackwood still needs someone to hold his hand during breakfast? Haven't you been weaned yet?"
Nicholas glanced at him, his tone calm but utterly infuriating. "No."
Jasper glared. "Excuse me?"
Nicholas spoke methodically. "Which is why I came to find my provisional fiancée."
Jasper wanted to flip the table.
This arrogant prick!
Polluting the air first thing in the morning!
Catherine couldn't help but laugh at the exchange.
Old Mr. Lancaster snorted. "Thick-skinned. He definitely takes after that old geezer from the Blackwood family."
"Nicholas has the thickest skin of them all!" Jasper complained through gritted teeth.
Serena looked up and spoke calmly. "I asked him to come."
Every insult Jasper was about to hurl instantly died in his throat.
He turned to Serena. "Why did you call him here?"
Serena picked up a napkin and slowly dabbed the corners of her mouth. "We have business to attend to later."
Then, she looked at Nicholas. "Sit down and eat."
A smile bloomed in Nicholas's eyes, and he answered obediently, "Okay."
Catherine immediately stood up, smiling warmly. "Nicholas, come, sit next to Serena."
"Mom!" Jasper protested.
Catherine looked at him. "What is it?"
Jasper looked deeply betrayed. "You're just going to give up your seat to him like that?"
Catherine replied matter-of-factly, "Well, Serena did invite him."
Jasper was defeated.
Fine.
