The other buyers, who had been quietly watching the standoff, immediately snapped into action. Someone yelled in agreement, "Exactly! If it's already in the system, we follow the rules!"
"Yeah! Bring it out!"
"We've all heard the rumors about the hidden asset in the cargo hold! You denied it all night, and now that it's finally right in front of us, you want to snatch it back?"
"A system glitch? Do you think we're idiots?"
"Did you only send it up because we nearly rioted, and now you're trying to backtrack?!"
"Since when does this organization yank an official asset off the board just because they feel like it?"
"Do you seriously believe you can just play the buyers here like absolute fools?"
"The system just verified everything! What possible excuse do you have to kill the auction now?!"
"We demand an inspection! Follow protocol and bring Specimen Fourteen to the stage!"
"Resume the auction right now!"
Voices merged into a furious, demanding roar that shook the entire hall.
The atmosphere exploded into total chaos.
The shouting grew deafening.
Several people stood on their chairs, raising their arms in defiance.
They had been strung along, driven mad with greed over this mysterious item. Some had even risked being violently expelled just to riot near the cargo hold, only to come back empty-handed without catching a single glimpse of the prize.
Now, the damn thing was officially locked into the system.
It was seconds away from rolling onto the stage. There was no way in hell they were going to let management shove it back into the shadows.
Their eyes burned with fanatic intensity.
The unified demand was absolute: follow protocol and proceed with the sale.
The uproar rolled through the room like crashing waves, each louder than the last.
"Resume the auction!"
"Follow protocol! Bring it out!"
To forcefully shut down the showcase now would be a public confession. It would prove that management had, in fact, been maliciously hiding an asset far more valuable than the grand finale.
And to cover their tracks, they had repeatedly made fools of every elite buyer in the room!
The item clearly existed. It was literally sitting just beyond the stage doors.
And yet, management still wanted to hide it.
How could a room full of starved, greedy predators ever accept that?
Not to mention, The Sterling Sovereign and Joker had both explicitly demanded an inspection.
If they backed out now, the organization's legacy would be utterly destroyed.
The Lead Auctioneer's grip on his gavel was painfully stiff.
On one hand, he had direct orders from The Commodore to kill the auction.
But doing so would publicly incinerate their own sacred rules.
